I’m starting the weekend with a guest ale. This one is from @Pennine and is a 7% Belgian Sour Blonde and I’m looking forward to it.

The beer is well carbonated and on opening the bottle the carbonation lifted the sediment a little. The beer is a beautiful golden brown colour tinged with an orange glow and capped with a thin white head that lasted. The beer isn’t fully clear as a result of the sediment lifting.

The aroma is making my mouth water already with a familiar waft of spice and bubblegum - so good. There is also a little orange or citrus lurking in there.

As soon as you take a sip your tongue is hit with the flavours of a really nice strong Belgian ale but almost immediately tangy marmalade takes centre stage. As the marmalade fades the flavours revert to sweet spicy bubblegum Belgian ale. At no point does the alcohol (remember this is 7%) come out of hiding.

This beer is very smooth and very flavoursome. I’m really enjoying it and could definitely drink more! Thanks very much @Pennine for sending me this lovely ale.

Mmm I felt the exact same I think I started out with 20 of each this one and the belgian blonde, they are both the same batch that was split, and went though about ten of these and two of the regular blonde. I am very happy with wlp655 and will definitely use it again.

Thanks for the review, with all the marmalade and bubblegum I am very tempted to try this with a wheat beer recipe. And maybe some mosaic?

Weird but nice, vanilla and walnut

I like the idea of a wheat beer recipe. You might need to be restrained with the Mosaic so as not to lose the marmalade and bubblegum?

"Flyswatter" English Ale (Broadside clone) by @pilgrimhudd

Let's get the clone thing out of the way first - this is a fine beer and a decent homage to Broadside, I certainly get the resemblance. From what I remember about the original though I think it's probably a bit more fruity - I'll come back to that...

Deep reddish-brown, pretty clear with garnet highlights. Nice creamy head which just about stuck around but good lacing on the glass to the end.

Carbonation is spot on for the style - enough, without being aggressively fizzy. This is an English Ale, not American fizzy pish!

Nice malty aroma. Tastewise it's a really nice, full malt sweetness but never anywhere near cloying. I note there's some dark crystal in there - in my opinion darker crystal malts seem to produce much more interesting flavours than lighter versions.

There's also a bit of chocolate malt in there, which I think dries out the finish just that little bit - there's just that tiny hint of roast which says go on, have another sip.

I really like this beer. Recipe and process wise I wouldn't change a thing. Only thing I would change is the yeast, but this is really splitting hairs.....

I believe it was fermented with CML "Midland" and no question, this is a good beer. But I think a bit more yeast driven fruity esters would make it next level - not because I think it would make it more like Broadside (although I suspect it would), but because I think it would improve the beer. I'd love to try this beer fermented with WY1318 for example - I've found Lallemand Verdant IPA to be very similar if you prefer dry yeast, or MJ M36 could be worth a punt.

Nitpicking aside, I would be very happy to have another pint of this. Good work fella 👍🍻

Yes, you hit the nail on the head there, not quite fruity enough, change of yeast is a good shout. I'm really glad you enjoyed it, I have to say that I think this is one of the best I've brewed. 👍

How was it? I now have access to all their selection. One of these days I will grab that 4 pack of kentucky breakfast stout.
It was fantastic. I've had this beer quite a few times. Delicious stout. And the KBS version is epic. I actually have two very good clone recipes for them. I've made the breakfast stout 3 times and it turned out pretty close to the original. Never made the KBS though. I did buy an extra keg to have a go at it but never got around to it. Need to figure out how to get the bourbon in the keg without introducing oxygen.

My last day of freedom today, back to waking up at 4:30 tomorrow 😢

Beer to the rescue!

This is the same malt bill as my Chinook Cascade user upper, but in 10l instead of 15l and with Hull melon hops. Came in at 7% and is a bit much if I'm honest, it needs a bit more body and sweetness to balance it out.
