It's get p****ed Friday for me as I don't drink on a work day.

First up is a taste test, a proper bottle of Moorhouse's Pendle Witch against my attempt.

Firstly mine (on the right) is a bit darker, the real PW has a tiny bit more malt and fruit flavour, I'm putting the fruitiness down to the yeast isn't right on mine. But overall I'm pleased, it isn't a million miles away but not exactly the same.

Bottoms Up!!

I'm finding great interest in picking apart a recipe for a beer clone. Changing single components at a time and seeing what happens.
My project clone is St Austell Tribute,I'm on #3 at the moment and I've got the malt and hops right I think..just need to try varying the yeast..plus I overshot abv slightly last time although it didn't really matter. I think it gets your brain working regarding beer recipes.

This is a great beer that arrived in my beer52 box today.... American blonde ale, really fruity and a nice bitter sweetness ratio, could drink this all day View attachment 37246
I like your beer temperature control facility in the background...a clever ploy..replacing the gas boiler with a glycol chiller!

What yeasts have you used and what are you going to try next?

I'm quite enjoying trying to replicate a decent beer, next up for me is Coniston Brewery bottle conditioned Bluebird Bitter, and I am going to try, for the first time, to harvest the yeast from the bottle

Clint when you've cracked it let us all know

I've used Wilko gervin (Notty) for three brews as I was adjusting, malt on second, adding a hopstand and water treatment as advised by st Austell... they advised to keep to an "English ale yeast".
I may try MJ LIBERTY BELL.
I felt my attempts were lacking in the prominent hop aroma and taste I get with Tribute but the hopstand sorted that. Notty is reliable and gives super clear beer with no sediment issues but is what it is...
I got half a batch of so left at the moment and a few brews to do so may be after Christmas until I visit this again.
PM me your address I'll send you one for evaluation...

Ridgeway Criminally Bad Elf (10.5%) Barley Wine

A novelty Christmas beer that’s actually pretty decent, I am really starting to enjoy Barley wines, but struggling to find many commercial examples, of them (given they seem to need a good few months to mature I am thinking of trying to make one for Christmas 2021 though I have made up the Youngs Harvest Barley Wine kit so will be curious how that is).

Starting out with this one, it’s fullers and I haven’t been disappointed by them yet. It’s much bitterer than I was expecting. Has a really nice malt and dark candi syrup aroma and dare I say a hint of barn, maybe fuggles. It’s very malty but the bitterness overwhelms it quickly. It reminds me a bit of arrogant ******* with fuggles instead of chinook. Very good.

Edit looks like they use goldings which is a bit surprising.
Oh nice I was drinking this regularly for years & now can’t find it anywhere, I thought Fullers had stopped doing it as it’s got an acquired taste but I love it ( one of the best )
