An Altbier kindly sent by @dave_77. First up, this has to be the prettiest beer I’ve poured for a long time. It’s a deep copper colour with moderate to high carbonation and brilliant clarity so you can all the bubbles filling a long lasting white fluffy head.
The aroma is a balance of rich complex malts and peppery Nobel hops that carries through to the palate. The bitterness is medium to high. Its well attenuated with a clean fermentation. I’ve never had an Altbier before, I’m a big fan of malty beers and I really enjoyed this one. Thanks for sharing it, I’m off to Google Altbier recipes now.

I thought it might be up your street. It scored 32pts at LAB, they felt it was out of balance and too bitter. Think it was 40ibu calculated. I like it🤷🏾

I think it needed the bitterness to offset the rich malt character, it tasted like there was a decent amount of crystal on board. That, and the peppery hops tied everything together nicely. I reckon it would have ended up a bit flat tasting. 32 is harsh, it was a much better beer than my Irish Red in my book.

This is the recipe for this one. I was a little surprised by the score as I had had good feedback from a few people but you never know how it's gonna come across in a flight of beers so part of me is not surprised 😂

Good question..one was easier to read than the other. Happy to share.as I like the style and would like to brew again to improve on it. What are your thoughts @foxy and @Alastair70 ?

I can't tell if they felt like the fruitiness was more and issue or bitterness? I couldn't read the second one well. There are more bitter altbiers though and yours sounds right in line with a fuchschen.
 
While cooking done food I’m having a guest ale from @Alastair70 This is his Helles Belles a Munich Helles at 5.25%

In appearance this is a crystal clear golden-amber beer with nice carbonation producing an off-white head which dissipated quickly but was easily roused with a swirl of the glass.

The aroma is malty and I’d say on the sweeter caramel side. There’s a little floral hop aroma in the background. Otherwise the aroma is clean and gives a fresh impression.

The flavour is almost exactly what you’d expect from the aroma and is beautiful. The bitterness is soft but evident and the finish is fairly dry despite the sweet malt impression. The beer isn’t thin at all and there are no off flavours.

Overall this is a thoroughly nice beer and I’d put a few of these in my trolley if they were in the shops 😉

(I hope the food isn’t burnt!)

Agreed, I was a little confused after reading both. I have tasted one from Germany and 2 from UK craft breweries that are well known for lager beers it was similar, maybe mine was a fraction darker and slightly more malty.

Cheers H! That’s the house lager, and the recipe hasn’t changed in the last 6 or 7 brews. I‘m doing another batch on Saturday, dropping the melanoidin and doing a single decoction instead.
If more lagers tasted like that, I’d drink more lagers. Who’d have thought I‘d have a leaning to the maltier side of things🤔

It’s a good brew. I like hoppy and I like malty so for me they’re all good!

Good luck with the decoction, make sure it’s thick and give it a good walloping after a gentle start. Let us know how you get on with it.
