Campden Tablets

I'm going to do a brew soon, treating the tap water with campden tablets. Is it best to treat the water and leave for a while before brewing with it? If so, then for how long? Thanks.

You only need to leave it for a minute, it'll have reacted by then. Also you only need about 1/4 of a tablet for 23l batch, but using a whole tablet won't hurt.

I use 1/2 a tablet in the mash water and 1/2 in the sparge.

The standard Campden tablet weighs 0.44 gms and will treat about 75 liters.

I use sodium metabisulpate powder as it was cheaper than in tablet form. Dosage 0.01g per litre, approximately. Usually treat all 30l for a batch together, 0.3g stirred in for a few minutes before heating to mash temp.

Jewellers scales are a must to measure small quantities.

Can't remember where I got this figure from, but used half a tablet worth per 5gal and erred on the side of caution.

This dosage hasn't let me down yet.

Thanks. I guess I was just worried that the water might need to sit for a while to work, just in case of affecting the brew or the tablet affecting the yeast.
