    Making normal strength wine?

Just started a Beaverdale Sauvignon Blanc today and made up to 21 litres as usual, I was curious after this post of what this would normally end up at so measured the gravity and starting off its about 1.08

    Making normal strength wine?

Another vote for Beaverdale here. I'm convinced On The House is the same as the WinExpert classic range, the instruction leaflet is extremely similar and to be honest i cannot tell the difference in taste, certainly not worth the price premium to my mind.

    Making normal strength wine?

Just more flavour to be honest and presumably a little more alcohol too, I usually do Sauvignon Blanc (Beaverdale or On The House) and fizz it up in my DrinkMate, tastes great to my not so refined palette. Cannot say I've noticed any more acidity at all.

    Making normal strength wine?

I make my wine kits up to 21 litres instead of the 23 they are supposed to be as I find them a bit meh otherwise, I guess that's another approach? Must measure the gravity before and after nextime to see how its finishing out.

Some advice on priming sugar for sparkling wine?

Delighted to hear its worked out well for you, I really think the Drinkmate is far superior to the Sodastream for wine and cider fizzing. I find leaving the fizzer head on the bottle in the fridge until the wine has completely chilled leads to easier pressure release. I just do one long blast...

    Wine Kit Water Treatment

In Ireland they put chlorine in it so i've always avoided assuming it would kill the yeast and give an odd taste, and used bottled water from Lidl or Tesco. Is that not the case in the UK/Elsewhere?

Fizzing up white wine - recommended varieties?

Yes, I dont mind the sediment in my cider at all but wine would bother me, plus i'm afraid of exploding bottles unless i used my cider ones and I think herself would roll eyes in an uncomfortable way if i started pouring wine from cider bottles!

Some advice on priming sugar for sparkling wine?

I refill the Sodasteam/Drinkmate canisters (they are interchangeable) from an old fire extinguisher. The is a place near me here that supplies/hires them and refills with co2, they are well used to people doing this for their Sodastreams. You can buy the adapter on amazon. If far far cheaper...

Some advice on priming sugar for sparkling wine?

I never had any luck with Sodastreams, they never seemed to last for me or do a great job fizzing. That said they are advertised as fizzing up water only whereas the Drinkmate is advertised for everything. Both use the same canisters (i have a big (ex fire extinguisher) co2 tank i refill them...

Some advice on priming sugar for sparkling wine?

Fizzing up white wine - recommended varieties?

I usually brew Sauvignon Blanc and as an experiment I fizzed up some in my Drinkmate fizzer and it was very drinkable. Just wondering if any other types of white wine people would recommend that would suit fizzing this way in terms of end taste result?

    Cider advice

One of the nicest Ciders i ever had was made with Tesco "Apple & Mango" juice, wasnt nice initially but six months later, wow was it absolutely delish. I'm starting a few demi johns of the stuff this weekend for this summer's enjoyment. I've also made a good few apple ciders using Lidl from...

    Carbonating after 2nd fermentation

I add one teaspoon of erythritol to sweeten and one of whatever normal sugar i have in the kitchen per 500ml bottle. I find it takes about a month at room temperature for the bottles to fizz up. Never had a problem with exploding bottles , that said they are never left long enough for the...

How to sanitise a hydrometer easily

I tried the Milton tablet method and it worked great. I used the hydrometer test tube instead and a plastic cup on top to keep all submerged, had a cup of coffee when waiting the 15 mins, sorted! In other news the bloody never ending brew isnt ready yet, i got a reading of 0.999

How to sanitise a hydrometer easily

Thats brilliant! Wouldn't have thought of that in a million years, also saves having to waste anything, just bung in the demijohn after sterilisation. Sounds like just the job, thanks.

    Cider not fermenting

I've had brews take up to a week to get going, wouldn't panic yet, though if it were me i'd give it a good stir with a sanitised brew spoon/paddle (i just pour boiling water over mine before using to sanitise).

How to sanitise a hydrometer easily

Up until now I havent been bothering to take readings, just bung it all together, giver a good stir and wait to the bubbler stops and add a week. So far so good. However as temperature drops and heating bills go up i've let the room where i do my brewing drop to about 16c most of the time. As a...

    Bottle or rack first

Up to you, if its finished a few weeks it should be good and settled/clear already. As long as you bottle using those taps and dont move the tub around it should be fine. People rack it off to get it off the bottom sediment, that way its easier to bottle without stirring up clouds of stuff. If...

    Techniques to bottling Wine question

For demijohns i just use a regular syphon and one of those plastic taps like above in the thread , You get pretty good with the sucking after a couple of goes with no spillage/wastage. I have a small demijohn auto syphon but I find it leaves to much behind (yes i'm that tight) and is a bit of a...

Is My DemiJohn half full or half empty

You'll be fine, I've tried a few kits this way in a demijohn and all were fine. As said, they vary a little in size but it's no accident the six bottle kit comes in that volume. Beaverdale is nice, my favorite being a Sauvignon Blanc. On the House is very nice too and the instruction sheets with...
