And this comes back to why many people dont trust ANY apps whoever creates them. This is one reason I dont have a smart phone. The other reason is social media

You choose what apps to use non are forced on you and that includes social media. (twitter, facebook etc)

Social media your on it now ya know :laugh8:

I had never given that a thought but having now done so i disagree for the reasons below -

Are Forums "Social Media" Sites?
PREV STORYNEXT STORY
Before reading on, would you consider forums "social media?" This is the question that is posed on a High Rankings Forum post.

Many people find that the answer varies. Forums, after all, are inherently social -- they bring people together on common ground. But others disagree. Forums are not "social media" because they don't like the negative connotations of social media (such as being "poked" like on Facebook). In other words, the person finds social media as meaningless but forums are meaningful. Your mileage may vary.

Forums really do predate social media. If I'd give my insights, I think forums are not "social media" per se (the way we social media folks see it), but they certainly were a stepping stone and precursor to "real social media." However, of course, there's the other side of the coin: social media is, after all, the technology that people use to share their opinions and insights, and forums definitely provide that.

If you were in their shoes would you trust google, i voted that i would use the app but if this app was run by google i wouldn't and i am not trolling.

I do not use chrome, google search or google maps.
I'd trust Google a lot more than I would some dodgy government group who are working with the company behind the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

And you are entitled to your opinion and in my opinion i think you couldn't be more wrong.

Also on the big social media platforms afaik your unable to delete things permanently. It's always in the news about someone (quite often politicians) getting into trouble because of something they've posted on social media. Apart from all the the trolling that appears to go on there, I'd worry that I posted something on a social media site whilst having had too many jars of homebrew which then comes back to bite me several years down the line :laugh8:

But not the hundreds people seem to have on their smart phones

TBH i am far happier using the PC i am on now and when i have no option and have to access the site on my phone i use Opera browser as its the only one left that uses text wrap (the video shows what it does but its not Opera- couldn't find a opera video)

I only have a few apps, if i want to view BBC i use Opera and just go to the website same with YouTube etc i don't see the point in downloading the app and agreeing to all the stuff they look at in the background.

I never post on the forum or any social media sites when i have had a drink as i imagine i would have to ban myself in the morning. :laugh8:

I use opera too as firefox just to decided randomly stop working on my ancient laptop one day.

I used to use Firefox many moons ago i think it was the most popular browser after internet explore and chrome back then but i stopped using it years ago.

Having watched the video i was surprised to see it got to 30% in its hay day.

Once something like this is unleashed upon the masses government will declare what a wonderful tool it is and how it can be used in so many other ways to make us all so much safer. For instance, immediately identify who was in the bank when it got robbed.

Will it though be a crime to turn your phone off? What if it dies while you're out and about? Will there be a knock on the door from the law asking you to account for your whereabouts for the time your phone was off? If you turned your phone off you had to be up to no good, right? I mean, why would anyone "reasonable" turn off a tool that was there to protect them? What if I just don't want a phone? Well, that implies something nefarious in itself, no? Option of a GPS implant for people that don't want a phone?

Kind of like the Wright brothers knowing they created a machine that would make war unthinkable. Openheimer was the same way with "the bomb".

I'm in the states. There's no way I could live in say, London, with the level of surveillance you Brits seem to find acceptable. I read somewhere there's at least one camera per capita across England, Scotland, and Wales.

It does make you think what future Government and policians might do (and impose) with such technology. You only have to look a how China uses its smart phone technology and facial recognition 'on' it's population. Who's to say we wont someday get a totalitarian regime in this country

Ive never heard of it. So microsoft have two browsers now, edge chromium and internet explorer?

Looks like it but they are advising using new Microsoft edge (chromium) for windows 10.

I imagine they will phase IE out in favour of edge

I think you are right the market share must be very low now, i have used edge (original) and new edge chromium and the latter is far better than the former from a user friendly point of view and for many other reasons.

With these types of things, when they sound really far fetched, I find the best thing to do is consider firstly motivation... Would the govt like to have the ability to monitor more of our data/activity/habits? Yes. Of course they would, no right thinking person would deny that those in charge would always seek more info rather than less.

So then consider, how many big noticable steps would they have to take to install what they need to do so....

Well with the advent of this app and so far as I can tell, zero assurances about the demobilisation of the app, aswell as the obvious fact that software is easy to change and adapt, the answer to that is zero. Because it will already be there. All they need to do is not switch it off.

This is genuinely about one step away from what Lucious Fox fell out with Batman about. Think on that.

Batman ffs

This thread reminds me of one of my favourite songs.
