This is genuinely about one step away from what Lucious Fox fell out with Batman about. Think on that.

Batman ffs

and all Batman had was a bunch of cameras. like London.

National security is usually not about the masses. It's about assuring the safety of the government in place. Example, China and the way their tracking their people. Can't have untraced people out there getting together planning a revolution.

If, unbeknownst to you, your friend Bob is a member of the resistance and tracking data shows you have lunch with him twice a week, the gest...., er, security forces, will certainly be knocking on your door.

The original internet was a way of communicating between nuclear bunkers then after the cold war it was given to the public domain, enter Tim Berners whats it who wrote the code for what we now know as www. or as an American congressman said at the time the biggest mistake in political history, the feckers cant fart without the whole world knowing they are terrified off it, the world is now a village so to speakathumb..

EDIT: To peopple that think the app is spyin on you. What's it spying in? The amount of griping you do before you're dead?

I actually laid that out more sensibly before I was completely spannered, but yeah - What you been doin apart from waiting to die that's a government secret.

I hope the poll on this forum doesn't reflect the opinion of the country otherwise you will be in serious trouble. The app will save lives, no ifs, buts, why's or wherefores.

Five seconds googling, and you will find that the framework used by most other countries, including the many outside of Europe, is an open framework developed by Google and Apple. Who are, erm, American. There is no 'European' app per se. This has nothing to do with Brexit / EU policy.

I think that NHS IT are batshit crazy not using it, but its nothing to do with Brexit for Gods sake.
I don't believe I used the term 'European' as I knew it was Google/Apple software, what I was saying is that it was the software that Europe was using. And that this government has a record of refusing to have anything to do with Europe at any cost, and though not unusual for this government lied about it.

'No ifs, no buts,' now who is remembered as quoting that most recently??? Anyway the leader of the government on the 6th February declared to the world at a speech held in Greenwich:
'when barriers are going up, and when there is a risk that new diseases such as coronavirus will trigger a panic and a desire for market segregation that go beyond what is medically rational to the point of doing real and unnecessary economic damage, then at that moment humanity needs some government somewhere that is willing at least to make the case powerfully for freedom of exchange, some country ready to take off its Clark Kent spectacles and leap into the phone booth and emerge with its cloak flowing as the supercharged champion, of the right of the populations of the earth to buy and sell freely among each other.
And here in Greenwich in the first week of February 2020, I can tell you in all humility that the UK is ready for that role. We are ready for the great multi-dimensional game of chess in which we engage in more than one negotiation at once and we are limbering up to use nerves and muscles and instincts that this country has not had to use for half a century.
Secretary of State Liz Truss tells me she has the teams in place: She has the lawyers, top dollar I’ve no doubt, the economists, trade policy experts and if we don’t have enough, or if they don’t perform, believe me we will hire some more.'

And this was after COVID 19 had been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern a week before.

The government more interested in being the Superman of free trade rather than getting their act together. And I think that is still the case. Though one suspects that they will be seen as Blunderman instead and just think, who will want to trade (i.e. open borders) with such an inefficient operation?

Yes. Reading through the thread, it's clear there is much distrust of government and big business that in my opinion is probably a significant factor in the negative responses. I'm not saying the distrust isn't warranted by the way, however balancing the stated data it uses versus the benefits, I think it's worth the risk.

Time will tell. If the UK fails to implement effective contact tracing and suffers a CV19 resurgence, whilst other countries have effective contract tracing and don't have a resurgence, we may expect national and international consequences.

I read a quote once that went something like.....

"The common good" has always been the justification for the ugliest of horrors visited upon men by their governments.

I'm a Libertarian. Bigger government is less trustworthy government. More intrusive government is even more so.

I think they said they need 50% of the population to use it for it to work so although the poll results are disappointing it looks like they will achieve the 50%

I imagine the younger generation will not worry about the app spying on them so will be happy to add to their phones collection.

I did a quick google yesterday and the percentage I came across was 60%

I don't think they will struggle to get 60% (see my younger generation post above) i wonder what the poll result would have been had the average age here been 30 and not 50 (BTW thats a guess )

I was just looking at that. I think a lot of these app makers know that most people that download them dont look at permissions. I think this is why we constantly see data breaches in the news

The links to permissions are not hidden but they are not obvious either.
