First big beer tonight, a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout. It’s a really nice beer but I actually preferred the version of this same beer that wasn’t barrel aged - it was somehow smoother despite having a higher ABV. This is still a cracking beer though.

Today we set off for the summit of The Sugar Loaf in Monmouthshire. Spouse retired early, beaten by lingering COVID and the realisation that the description of it being easy was a little short of the mark (still got 2/3 the way up though). Daughter and I pressed on and made it, knackered, to the top.

Here's our reward, sourced from the nearby and recommended Sugar Loaf Vineyard...

That's some view, are you still running the ultra stuff. World record smashed today in Berlin

No just our weekly hike, had to take some time away from ultras. Not enough time in the day for everything lately. I will definitely get back into it in a couple years though. That's amazing about the WR! He's 37 too!

This is the first proper taste of my pseudo festbier. Only 15 days old at this point, but I wouldn’t use a kveik again for lager. In my opinion, even after a lot more conditioning, I don’t think it’d be remotely lager-like.

Will do the beer again with different ingredients and yeast I think.

Please excuse my giant meatloaf behind the beer 🙈🤦‍♀️

Edit: gave mine to my husband cos I hate it 😂

Replaced it with a glass of Jammy Red Roo. 😅

Pint from the keg of Vienna Lager. 2 weeks in keg. Will brew this again, recipe from BYO magazine. Or maybe a Marzen next time. I’m not really a lager drinker either, but this could sway me. Not sure why it would need weeks and weeks in the keg to condition. Maybe so it clears? I did add gelatine after fermentation so perhaps that helps speed it up.

I wonder where the idea came from that Kveiks make lager like beers? I have hated all the Kveiks beers I have brewed too. They all tasted like mushrooms and dirt. :vomitintoilet:
