Together with his competition beer @pilgrimhudd sent me a gift of his 4.2% American Stout.
You can see it’s well carbonated with a light tan coloured head which settled down quickly but never went away. The beer is as black as you might expect and I can tell you it’s lovely and clear.
The aroma is very clean with chocolate and coffee in the foreground supported by lovely roasty notes. I’m not getting much hop aroma.
Now at this point I just dived in with a couple of big gulps - biiiig mistake! This beer is highly carbonated and it foamed up in my mouth like coke and mentos. Whoa! . I guess that’s American stouts for you, I should have known better OK, knock out some gas and try again…
Much better! The flavour is mild hedgerow fruit and raisins with chocolate, coffee, and a hint of liquorice in that order. Smooth balanced flavours, nice body, nicely balanced bitterness, and quite a clean dry finish for a stout.
This beer is a very different animal before and after you whip the living daylights out of it. The latter is beautiful. Thank you Pilgrim!
