I suppose the question is that age old one.

It's easy to say you shouldn't use x
But it's harder to say you should use y

What is y

I asked my mate who makes lots of great cider enjoyed by all who try it....... he says he uses powdered Sucralose as his sweetener as it wont ferment, he uses 1 gram in 50 litres of cider, but experiment to taste

and when asked about about carbonating......200g sugar in 50L cider, make sure it is all dissolved, bottle in clear beer bottles so you can see the sediment when pouring out.

could take 4 to 5 months before its at max fizz.

will get better tasting for about 6 months after bottling and then it should be stable for a least a couple of years.

Been bottling tonight
TC cider with cinnamon cloves and a tea cup of rum
Very nice can't wait for it to carb up

I'm no expert but one gram in fifty litres doesn't seem like much.
I must admit I get a bit confused about all the different sugars/sweeteners at times especially when the Americans have different names for some. For instance I just googled powdered sucrose and one site says it's table sugar?

Interesting he only uses 200g of sugar, but says it'll take 4-5 months to get maximum fizzy. That's only 4 gram per litre. Whereas Roddy uses 12 grams per litre, I think.
But then again Roddy likes it fizzy and drinks within 4-5 days, not months

. I'm not saying who's right and who's wrong. Just pointing out how varied things are.

Regarding the artificial sweeteners. My partner doesn't drink usually but I asked her if she wanted me to make something lo alcohol and refreshing.
I explained how people are making second2none's punch. She told me if she has artificial sweeteners it brings on a asthma attack.

sorry spelling error! it should have been Sucralose, I've edited the post now.

My mate spent the best part of a month recently collecting apples and turning em into cider, he has been doing it for a few years and makes bloody good cider, only uses the natural yeast in the apples too.

yeah still artificial though but allegedly the less risky of the choices, apparently is there a natural back sweetener for cider is his most asked question

Well, you know everything causes cancer or disease these days. It was only a few weeks ago they were banging on about processed meat. As if I'm going to do with a bacon butty.

I'm sure the alcohol we're all consuming is doing more harm than the odd bit of artificial sweetener.

I read that pirate hence my earlier post about the same remarks on vaping. The truth is they don't know. Which I guess is worrying. However there can't have been more than 2tsp in that yeast packet which is now mixed into 25l so it's not exactly concentrated. As I said its in Diet Coke and that is a damn lot sweeter than I could ever drink. As I said the cider isn't sweet at all really just got rid of the harsh edge.
Each to there own but the 8 pints plus a night I drink I think is far more worrying.

Yeah if you're really drinkin 8 pints a night why worry about a bit of sweetener, I don't drink that much really, a couple o three glasses o wine maybe 2 or 3 nights a week, or maybe a couple o three pints of beer, but with 6 others in the house it doesn't get wasted.

But the raspberry turbo cider I'm doing is for the missus and if it finishes too dry I guess I'm gonna have to resort to sweetener.

I could not wait any longer... Bottled last Friday - it has got bubbles and the taste is really OK already! :D

[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] I've got 6 bottles of that first batch waiting on me for friday I can hear them shouting at me even 140mile out at sea [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]
