For those who have been able to buy this over the counter, were you able to buy just a single bottle?

I found a chemist who could order it, but would only order me a dozen bottles at a time! I've ordered some from t'internet for the time being, but would be interested to hear, for next time.

Thanks again!

Got mine from Boots. Think it was £6.94.
Only odd thing was being questioned as to why I wanted it.

The lady said that it is sometimes used for 'backstreet' purposes ?!?

Which one to get, the Alcoholic Tincture or the Antiseptic Aqueous Solution?

The datasheet says:

Videne® Antiseptic Solution - An aqueous
antiseptic solution containing 10% w/w
Povidone-Iodine which gives 1% w/w
available iodine.

Videne® Alcoholic Tincture - An alcoholic
solution containing 10% w/w Povidone-Iodine
which gives 1% w/w available iodine.

Sorry to resurect this post but I am about to buy some videne from the local chemist, they say it's antiseptic solution not the stuff used in operating theatres, would the antiseptic solution be the correct one to buy?

Also does this work okay with hard water or not?

Just sent them an email, asking for Free iodine levels when diluted, and if it contains any Lanoline and such like . . . appears to be similar to BTF Iodophor though so might be more than suitable
Sorry to resurrect this post but what are the dilution rates for this for sanitation?

Personally never heard of using Videne in homebrewing before. Get yourself some sanitiser specifically designed for homebrewing uses like chemsan. 10ml makes up 5litres so it goes a long way

I haven't read the full thread but here's my two penneth, I have used Milton sterelising tablets all the time I have been home brewing, I recently moved to Chemsan and now wouldn't use anything else, it seems expensive but you only use 10ml in 5 litres of water and when usimg a spray bottle to cover all surfaces it's quick and only takes two minutes to sanitise everything, I will not be using anything else.

Chemsan doesn’t kill everything
And is not as broad spectrum

I have chemsan and have been using it as well as the previous stellar and starsan but they don’t kill all and especially not if you have an infection which i do and need to deep clean

Hence asking about the original post and dilution rates

Videne (and Betadine - same thing) are antiseptics intended for use on skin. Can't really see how it would be that helpful for beer containers and utensils. I would have thought bleach* would be a better option. Open to correction on this.

*You do have to make sure all traces of bleach are removed after use, but if you've lots of time, it's relatively easy.

if you have a stubborn infection that a typical brewing alkali cleaner mixed to a high strength isn't shifting then prob a few other ways to attack it. I'm sure you've thought of some of these, but this is where my head would be on zapping the bugs:
  • boil (even pressure cooker) small bits like valves, connectors, disconnects etc be sure to fully dismantle everything
  • bleach with solid rinsing afterwards
  • iodophor soak as per product guidelines
  • spray 99% isopropyl alcohol
  • if using plastic buckets - consider replacing them if they have scratches inside etc

Videne is an iodine based antiseptic. The bugs it's killing die whether they're on your skin or fermenter! Fivestar (makers of "Starsan") make a product "Io-star"; similar to Videne.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iodophor

I'm slightly cautious of it, because I believe (most likely wrongly) I can taste residual "iodine" in the beer. And because things do stain brown. If you are in the habit of "soaking" things in spray-on sanitiser, and then forgetting to rinse it out ... don't use iodine based sanitisers! Otherwise, you can be sure iodine kills microbes it contacts ... you can't be quite so sure with the likes of Starsan.
