Just looked on internet could Fam 30 be used, £25.00 for 5l.
Just sent them an email, asking for Free iodine levels when diluted, and if it contains any Lanoline and such like . . . appears to be similar to BTF Iodophor though so might be more than suitable

Hi I have just got myself some Videne :thumb: :thumb: . Got it online from clicky.
Advice required please, I've just got myself some Videne through GA's clicky, they've sent me the Surgical Scrub.

What's the difference? Do I use it or send it back?

There will probably be an obvious answer to this, but does the bottle prescribe the dilution levels for sterilisation?

I've had a look on both the Videne and MIMS (pharmaceutical prescribing reference guide) websites and both are silent on this topic.

And is the pharmacy pricing a rip-off? The MIMS entry reckons that 500ml should cost £2.49!

NB: To see the full info on the MIMS website, you need to do a Google search on "Videne" - the direct link requires a login to see the detail for some bizarre reason...

It contains 'moisturisers' . . . lanolin and stuff to stop surgeons hands drying out  . . . similar to the BTF Iodophor 'Teat Wash' which contains lanolin to prevent cows udders from getting sore. Send it back and say you need the Antiseptic solution.

No . . . The correct product is a antiseptic solution intended for use neat preparing operation sites by swabbing. However, it can be diluted to give a free iodine level of 12.5ppm (1.25ml in 1L of acidified water, to pH3.0), which acts as a no rinse sanitiser not a steriliser (While there are chemical sterilisers available they tend to be extreme products that should not come into contact with anything destined for consumption)

Given the Mark up on the chemicals we use from LHBS I would say that your independent Chemists prices are pretty good. . . Mine for example only charges around 4 quid for a 500ml bottle, which is reasonable given that they last ages.

Aleman did the makers of FAM 30 ever get back to you?

Cheers

I've spoken to Express Chemist, they were very helpful and suitably apologetic. Antiseptic Solution will be despatched today.

They aren't bothered about me returning the Surgical Scrub, presumably the item value isn't worth the hassle and return postage to them, so I will rephrase part of my previous question.

Is this of any use to me?

Of course it is :thumb:
As part of your regular sanitising routine use the surgical scrub on your hands and arms instead of boiling them for 20 minutes :P

Just got my Videne and wanted to clarify a couple of point guys -
1.25ml per litre for a spray sanitiser?
and - 5ml in 4 ltr of water for a soak and rinse?
Is that ok? need to crack on today and get some bottling done
cheers

That's what I use ideally you need the pH of the solution to be under pH3.0, not that a lot of home brewers bother about that bit

Thx Aleman - aint got anything to check PH - as yet - only a garden soil tester lol

Do I need to worry that it says 'not to be taken' on the front?

(I assume it means orally, and that it's not a warning to thieves!)

Don't really want to kill myself with cleanliness :D

Videne is a topical antiseptic formulated for the preparation of surgery sites . . . . and in it's neat form should not be taken internally . . . diluted 800 times . . .then used, and allowed to drip dry . . .before diluting what's left with beer (lets say 5 ml remaining diluted with 500ml of beer so that's a further 100 times) . . . means a total dilution of 80,000 times

Given the listed ingredients actually have E numbers and we are diluting 80,000 times, is the fact that it is licensed for external use only (in it's undiluted form!) something to worry about? I don't think so.

Of course if you are concerned you could always buy something like Evans Vanodine FAM30 - Which is licensed as a no rinse dairy disinfectant (And is as near as damn it the same as Videne . . .Just with added phosphoric acid . . . which is in Coca cola)

Before I order some, and I confirm this is the stuff that you good people use (diluted)? The murky brown-looking stuff?

Many thanks in advance, something to make bottling easier would be a real blessing!

Thats the stuff. It cost me about a tenner including delivery. I'll pop round my local pharmacy before I get the next bottle, but it lasts a while at 1:500 dilution.

Much obliged. I tried one chemist, who looked at me blankly, but I'll try another tonight, to see if I can avoid some P+P.

I understand it can be used in spray form (after dilution) which would be fab, as I generally forget to sterilise some vital piece of equipment, and have to halt the whole process.
