Get rid of all Oscar Wilde's statues. But over time the most popular opinions change. You could be jailed for being gay in Scotland less than 40 years ago!

Then don't have posts on an international forum.I don't think expats or johnny foreigner can tell us which statues to demolish in THIS country!
And I don't give wombats arse to your views. So if there was a status to people who committed genocide in Hobart would you leave it there. F there was a status of people who sent prisoners as slaves to NSW would you leave it there. If there was a statue to Churchill who masterminded Galipoli would you leave it. I if there was a statue to Douglas Jardine outside the SCG would you leave it there. Then don't have posts on an international forum.
History can't be changed, when the Brits landed in Tasmania they found a race of people who still had to carry fire around with them, so they hunted and killed every last one of them.
I think the same thing happened in Hawaii to the Indians who lived there.
All these thing are unfortunate but they happened, we can't envisage the same thing happening again as we can't with the death camps. Its history and should be remembered as such not try to hide it.
As I said its history, history can't be changed. Destroy every book and start from scratch.? Back in the day people thought black people were a few pegs higher than an animal. We can't do anything to change that way of thinking except make sure that it doesn't happen again. Educate not desecrate. And I don't give wombats a**e to your views. No reason to glorify slavers through a public statue. Put them in a museum with proper description of what they did, I don't think anyone here is arguing for history to be forgotten. As I said its history, history can't be changed. He would be shouted down these days.extract from a letter in the Times on differing opinions; rather good, isn't it?
John Stuart Mill (On Liberty, 1859) held that “the mental wellbeing of mankind (on which all their other wellbeing depends)” was founded on freedom of expression of opinion. He gave four reasons: first, those who attempt to silence any opinion contrary to their own assume their own infallibility; second, suppose that the silenced opinion is indeed erroneous, it may nonetheless contain a grain of truth, and since the prevailing opinion on any subject is rarely the whole truth, it is only by the collision of adverse opinions that the whole truth may be revealed; third, even if the received opinion is in fact the whole truth, it is essential that vigorous debate upon it be tolerated, lest it be held as mere prejudice, without explicable rational grounds; fourth, in the absence of such debate, the received opinion risks becoming mere dogma, preventing analysis through reason or personal experience.
I think you'd probably remove it but you'd discuss it first & not act like primitive hooligans. And I don't give wombats a**e to your views. The Modern Slavery Act was passed five years ago. It's not perfect by any means, but to suggest slavery in the UK is being ignored is wrong. What gets me the slave trade still goes on at a merry pace today in the UK, especially sexploitation & personal house staff. The worst offenders are foreigners who came here recently. Not a word uttered by our great leaders or the fakestream media.
Also wasn't Titus Salt firmly anti-slavery?I live in Yorkshire so we only have white slave owners on plinths. We also have world heritage sights glorifying the magnificence of their buildings too. (Saltaire)
Yes that was his religious conscience. But it was fine to indenture whole families & as a liberal MP voted against raising the working age to 10. he wanted to keep it at 5.Also wasn't Titus Salt firmly anti-slavery?
Large amounts of illegal immigrants are "Disappeared" into slavery. Our government encourages illegal immigration with handovers from the french in the channel. Lots of the children go missing so we can make a guess where they are going. The Modern Slavery Act was passed five years ago. Have you got any evidence to back that up? I'm not necessarily saying I doubt you but as I hadn't heard it myself I'd be interested to know your sources.Large amounts of illegal immigrants are "Disappeared" into slavery. Have a wander over to the @ukcolumn.org . They have a few written pieces on it. It was also mentioned on yesterdays live show.Have you got any evidence to back that up? I'm not necessarily saying I doubt you but as I hadn't heard it myself I'd be interested to know your sources.
UK Column is not a reputable source of news!
UK Column - Media Bias/Fact Check and they do not always provide a source!
Doesn't seem that reliable...Have a wander over to the @ukcolumn.org . They have a few written pieces on it. It was also mentioned on yesterdays live show.
You might have to become a member to see some of their stuff though. They always back up with evidence.
