I have brought this Star San steriliser boy was that expensive!!! Now I know you have to dilute it. But I have herd you can put it into one of spray bottle like you get with glass cleaner etc do anybody how much you put of Star sun into these bottles please to make it up Many Thanks

The label suggests 15-25ml per 10litres. At 20ml that equates to 1ml per 500ml spray bottle. But I guess it depends on the size of the spray bottle.
Tiny syringe.

Your local chemist will likely give you free a small 5ml syringe - the sort of thing you use to measure out calpol for a baby. Handy for measuring out star san.

I use 1.6ml in a 1 litre hand sprayer, and 8ml in a bottle of 5ltre water I use and re-use a good number of times until it gets bits of dirt floating in it then ditch and mix some fresh.

Worth getting some 'urine ph testing papers off ebay'. PH of any mixed starsan solution needs to be at 3 or lower to remain effective.

Majic stuff Starsan, wouldn't be without it now !

Right Thank you is the spray gun the better way of doing cleaning Your equipment cause each time What have used in the past is this Harries No Rinse Sterilizer and you have to make 2 litre every-time you want to sterilise anything. Also why I am here We just decanted a carboy of wine into bottles and to be quite frank we made a dogs dinner of it. In transferring it firstly I used the standard tubing but after a while that seemed to get a lock on it then tried the pump type that ballhoo sell it was ok but made air bubble and there is no way of stopping it and went over the floor So in the end I had to lift the carboy and pour it straight into a standard jug then pour it into a bottle Thank God I am a ex Weightlifter/power lifter so what do you guys use. Thanks

I would make it up in a 2l bottle and fill the spray bottle from there, easier to do and work out how much.

Although initial cost is more than most, it lasts years.

So how much of it will I need to put in a 2 litre bottle?

Last time I had to sort out babyswas 35 years ago :whistle:

So how much of it will I need to put in a 2 litre bottle?

Work on 1.5 or 1.6ml per litre of water - so for 2 litres of water use 3.0 - 3.2ml

I use a both a hand sprayer plus have 5l mixed in a bottle which I use and re-use

Hand Sprayer is great for spraying into taps and spraying lids to use them as resting sanitised trays for spoons etc
5litre bottle is great for dumping a load of starsan into a spare FV on a brew day for sitting equipment, sypnos tubes, stirrers, sieves in prior to use. Then dumping that back into the 5litre bottle for re-use.

I use a 10 litre food container which gets everything small fired into it, auto syphons get starsan ran thru them whilst sitting in it, from that i can pour it into FV/DJ/bottles or anything else large and in the case of my youngs narrow neck FV's they can be left upside down sitting on top of the starsan tub to let access drain back into it.

if used with hard water starsan can go cloudy, going cloudy is also an indicator that it may be spent, in this case the ph tests are the only way to ensure your solutions ph is 2.5-3 and active, when the ph is over 3 its lost its potency.

I personally buy 5litres of tesco ashbeck water @ about £1 and use this to mix up a 5l batch of sanitiser which i apply via a spray bottle, i also jeep a small bowl with less than a litre of solution to keep small things like siphon taps bottle caps etc submerged and sanitised until needed.. I dont reuse any starsan but a 5l bottle will last over brewing and fermenting 3-4 brews.

8ml per 5l is the dose i use.

Can I ask you guys how you siphon you wine as said above today when siphoned into bottles I had to pretty quick (Which I was not to stop the wine flow got on the floor) tried this https://www.balliihoo.co.uk/registe...3-litre-auto-syphon-no-more-sucking-p-30.html But you have to get it just right or it overfills and goes over the floor and also gives a lot of froth and that happened a few time.So in the end I lifted the Carboy and poured it into a pint mug and poured into the bottles that way took a much longer time and it was a bit of a strain hold one of those carboys 3/4 of wine and pouring it into a small jug. Thank God I am a ex Power /weightlifter but at the ripe age of 67 it was still a bit of a strain :nono:

I always go for the high concentration and use 5ml in 2l of water.
I store in an old dj and use this to top up the spray bottle and the rest gets used time and again for rinsing djs, fvs, sucking into syphons, airlocks etc etc. Test with litmus to ensure still acidic enough as mentioned above. I occasionally get a bit of pink tinge in it when the odd cap or bottle with some wine left gets sterilised. I am sure this will still be ok but tend to change it if this happens.

Yes, pricey but lasts FOREVER! 😉

Still cannot get my confidence around the fact that you do not need to swill out the foam residue you get in djs etc when swilling. I think it is a visual thing with me but others insist that the residue has no effect whatsoever on what you subsequently dump into the dj eg.

Never used an auto syphon but get a "little bottler" . Excellent. Stops automatically and when you syphon into bottles stop it right at the top. When you then remove the bottler from the bottle the displacement leaves just the right amount of free space at the top of the bottle before corking etc.

Link here or you can also get it on its own without the tap and just connect to a tube.

Starsan contains phosphoric acid which will attack metals. What sort of sprayers are you folks using?
