I think that's why I've never wanted a wort chiller, the thought of flushing all those watery pennies down the drain! I realize brewing sends my water meter round enough as it is.
No offence mate, but your post pretty much sums it up for me. The concern you have is for your finances and not for the impact upon the environment. And that is why hitting us in the pocket is the only way of reining in our overuse of resources.

But what constitutes over use? I bet the super rich that own large industry are using the most and paying the least. Probably because they own the energy companies too and don't like to charge themselves too much...

Like the amount of water we use making a brew. Most of it for cooling unless you have a counterflow chiller.
Still, it falls out of the sky, innit, so what's the problem.
No, I don't use a counterflow.

This is something we could do. I sort of keep meaning to, but on the day, it is at the time we are nearly over the line. so to speak, and it is just one *** too much to drop the chilling water into an empty FV and let it cool down to the point when it might go on the garden or into a water butt or something. So, yes, of course I am no less guilty than anyone else.

Use it for cleaning if you don’t want to wait for it to cool

This is also a good suggestion and one that comes with the GF booklet. I will try to actually do this next time, after 88 fails on the bounce.athumb..

Or buy another water butt and fill that outside for when you need the water. Or, going the other way, filter and sterilise it and use a lot more of that in brewing instead.

I started with two 100L water butts at £19 each. So for £40 I can store 200L of water. But this year I built a pond that is 15ftx 5ft and a foot deep with a pond liner for £25 and some timber.
Now I have 2100L to play with :laugh8: As I grow my own veg I like to use rainwater. We always get plenty but always end up using mains water. Hopefully not this year.

The climate is less pressing for those struggling to make ends meet. putting food on the table now is more important that a warmer planet in the future. If everyone gave up one of the following..

no meat eating pets (cats or dogs)
2 or more children.
no personal transport
no flying (being airborne by means of HB farts doesn't apply)
eating meat if you aren't a vegetarian.
non local holidays

and yet who will? - thought not.

I reckon the rich will leave the earth via mr musk.,mr. bezios or mr. bransons craft and return when all the plebs have died. with robots to cater for their every need.
Unfortunately by then it will be too late when they realise the world is such a lonely place.

We can I'm sure as has been said earlier justify OUR choices. Whenever you can afford it make the kinder choice, not the cheaper one. That's the best I can do.

A few things that have happened in the last few years since climate change became such a big issue for the government -
The feed-in tariff payment for installing solar panels on your home was stopped in March this year. The incentive has effectively been removed.
On 21 May 2018 The government decided to cancel the electrification of the rail network in South Wales, and opted for diesel locomotives to be used instead.
New legislation brought in by this government effectively blocks the development of onshore wind farms, and initial subsidies that were offered have now been stopped.
Instead a new nuclear power station is being funded by us, but all profits are going to a French corporation who are getting China to make it.

......Anyone would think they are not very serious about promoting renewable energy.

Oh, and chipping entire forests to be fed to a coal fired power station doesn't help much either.

It seems that Gunge has managed to have a lot of fun and has had everyone hoodwinked on this site. My guess is that in reality he is an arch-environmentalist and he has been playing this game in order to prompt others to put hard environmental facts and arguments on the site in order to get many other people to read them.
The suspicion was confirmed when he said "Has anyone asked them if they know how carbon dioxide ( a trace gas, the total amount of which comprises a tiny amount contributed by us ) stacks up against water vapour?".
It's simply not possible to be as stupid as Gunge is pretending to be (unless, of course, you are called Donald Trump -- there is an exception to every rule), therefore he is pretending. QED.
Come on now, Gunge, it's time to admit it - you're really an anti-climate-change activist, aren't you?

It's not that that gets to me; it does fall out of the sky in these parts, it's the wasted heat: I use several kWh of electricity or propane and then throw away all the money I've spent heating the brew. If I could use that energy to heat the next brew, I'd be a lot happier, but then even I can't drink enough beer to justify continuous production!

I trust that you realise I was referring to water vapour's capacity as a GHG v carbon dioxide, and not just comparing amounts in the atmosphere?

Meanwhile, this is why the oft-quoted ( but erroneous ) figure of 97% of 'climate scientists' do what they do.

Are all the world's governments involved in this Global warming conspiracy?

The British gov. can't organise leaving a European based trade bloc, yet can hoodwink almost the entire population of the UK to believe in Global Warming????????

This doesn’t mean that the planet isn’t warming.

I was going to post a few quotes from the article in Gunges post but the one above says it all its not about whether global warming is happening it's about the money that in his view is being wasted paying the scientists to pretend its happening faster than it is, as it is happening do we do something now to try to stop it or do we leave it 50 years to see if they were wrong?
