am just about finished doing a computer for a friend, but it won't play dvd movies!!, it keeps coming up with this: Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

any ideas lads??

Hi falafael,

If the machine's running Windows XP, the operating system was never shipped with a DVD decoder (copyright reasons etc etc). Personally, I tend to use VLC from http://www.videolan.org/. It's opensource, free to download and will play almost any piece of media your friend can throw at it! :thumb:

HTH,
Tim.

I cannot recommend this more. VLC (VideoLan) is just the smallest best software for playing any media type.

It's not flash with a GUI interface but just WORKS!!

I found it whilst looking for the best player for Linux Mint and it just did the job.

On my Windows machines I only use it as I haven't got Gb's of MP3's or videos that need to be in neat folders etc.

Good link :thumb:
