So as a follow up to my recent post asking about Soufflet malt on the Brouwland site I came across another very cheap malt from Belgomalt. They are selling 25kg cacks of Pilsner and Pale malt at 22€ per sack! Anybody ever used their malt? Sorry should say 26€ with vat added.

I, for one, haven't tried it, I bought my Soufflet Pilsner for a specific project, which I still haven't got round to doing. I tend to avoid continental pales because they tend to be kilned off a bit darker than the English counterparts - Château being particularly dark - and they probably use different strains of barley. No reason to suspect they're not excellent malts, but not sure they're ideal for British styes.
Why don't you try it and see how you get on?

This may sound strange but I have gone back to Rolling beers their delivery charges are better and quicker. Also with Brouwland you see a price then think good then have to add VAT . Nothing in brewing is usually needed next day but with Rolling the stuff I just ordered will be here tomorrow. I have ordered some Soufflet pale malt. You are right about the colour but I don't make too many pale beers and it is only 4.5-6.5 EBC more or less the same as Simpsons pale ale malt;

Fair comment, but when I access Brouwland, the VAT is included in the price. See below, It's a bit faint, but to the right of the price it says per unit (VAT included). I wonder if your confusing it with the discounted price: it starts off with the price for 6 and the price for one sack is €27.49.

No I get vat excluded no idea why could be a preference issue? Any how I have been trawling through the Soufflet website trying to get more details about their pale ale malt and the only one I can find that matches the colour spec from their European maltsters is Bairds . I have no idea if it is though but surely when I recieve the sack there will be some reference as to the manufacturer?

Bairds is part of the Soufflet group. Most unlikely that Scottish Golden Promise is being flogged off by Rolling Beers, though. It's most likely to be French-grown barley malted at one their French plants.

There are no such markings on the sack that I have.

Agreed very strange that there is no actual specification given for the malt. I back track on this being Bairds as it would be silly to expect a cheap product to be sent from the UK. I have asked for some extract info you have to some idea what gravity you can make with the stuff 🤣

I've got a sack of the pilsner, but I haven't used it yet. Hoping to get the yeast culture on over the next few days and then I'll get on with my batch of Blonde d'Esquelbec and other choice delights from the Noerth East.
Mind you, it was -5C when I woke up, here in the arctic wastes of sunny Brittany so I'd better turn my hand to building an incubator first.

I don't know if it;s indicative, but I found Château 2RW and 6RW pilsner and their pale to give a bit less extract than some of the corresponding German malts, but I've no idea how good French malt is, yet.

I have asked Rolling for an expected extract figure, surely not that difficult to get from their suppliers. I have been on the Soufflet website but there are no links to specification data. It is not that important I will just use a rough average for pale malt across the field . I think I may use some on Thursday to make a Scottish 80/- style beer. It was -4 C this morning here just North of Pau.

Bloody Hell! I didn't know it got so cold that far south. You're almost on the Costas! I'm sticking to lager for now, with a few hybrids thrown in using Novalager.
Let us know how you get on with info from Rolling Beers. It's a bit worrying that there's no technical info and Soufflet's website is worse than useless.
