Basically, are they any good? The option of getting 23L inside them is a massive incentive to me. Are they at least a step up from a King Keg - there doesn't seem to be anything in between, though I will always do some batches in bottles.

Spares?

Lower PSI rating? I'm not planning to force carbonate, but I'd want them to hold lager pressure securely.

I'd want an S30 valve fitted

for kegging larger than 19l u can get 30l or larger commercial kegs, and as your using a co2 supply flushing out the excess headroom with co2 isnt a problem. tho they are less diy friendly, utube has how to's for removing the spears etc and they are used by some home brewers.

however 19l is not a bad keg size if you consider you get to bottle/minikeg the surplus for stashing and sampling while different beers are on tap. and while sorting out 40 odd bottles is a pita, half a dozen or so isnt anywhere near as tedious or time consuming to sort

OR the good ol favorite up your brew length to 2 corny fulls ;)

and if u ever move an empty crate and discover a full set of stashed bottles from old brews its a great bonus..

:thumb: all

Hmm :wha: :hmm:

I really don't know on this one. In a way, the 18/19L cornies are already less than perfect, because of their small batch sizes. If I stick to extracts and ever move on to AG, then I can stick to 5 US Gallon/19L batches I suppose (or double, as Fil says). Yes, sometimes it's nice to bottle a few to take around...

Sometimes you just want to dump the lot into a keg and be done with it, though, and kits are rarely under 20/21L even brewed short.

If there's a THBF bursary available for me to risk life and limb testing some pressurised Chinese welding out for the wider good of the community, then I'll take it. ;) Otherwise, got some thinking to do :hmm:

Hi All
Homebrew forums seem to be Cornelius-centric, and faintly xenophobic when it comes to kegs. Before I pressed my 23 litre Chinese-made keg into service, I checked posts about them. Most negative comments were from people who hadn't used them, as in this thread. The people who did have these kegs posted very positive comments about them, including a guy who's had years of good service from one.

My own keg is storing its 2nd brew, so I have no long-term impression. Immediate impression, however, is favourable. The build quality is entirely up to the job - welded seams look smooth and even. The lid seals without needing to be forced with CO2, so I can add priming sugars and walk away, and, of course, it takes a full brewlength for those many of us who want to make 5 galls.

I was never greatly impressed by the idea of being limited to an 18/19 litre brewlength, so never joined the cult of Cornelius worship! Nor am I likely to. The glut of used kegs has passed - the soft drinks makers must've pretty much cleared their inventory by now. Second-hand keg prices are so close to those of new kegs that, to me, it doesn't make sense to buy them. If new kegs are the sensible option, I'll stick to the 23 litre ones.

Ah well, you pays yer money...

Cheers, Chris

Really? I'm wondering if the design of these is consistent, or whether they vary. the-home-brew-shop says its 23L cornelius-style kegs seen here have to be blasted with some CO2 to keep the seal and you can't rely on secondary fermentation. See the description on that link :wha:

Do they look the same as yours?

Hi MTW
The shop ones look the same as mine, but I think they're from a different source. Description says 40 psi as max pressure, whereas mine's 60.
Cheers, Chris

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but just wondering if anyone on here has one of these 23l cornies, and would mind letting me know the height once the disconnects are on? I have 74.5cm in my brewfridge so if it is higher than that I'm SOL.
Cheers!

I've had two 23L Chinese Cornys for three years and used them in around 10 brews. They have been perfect with no problems. The only thing that might be difficult is their height. Being a bit taller than the 19L ones they will not fit into a table top fridge if you are thinking of going the kegerator route.

Thanks, mate. Glad to hear that you've had no problems with it.
I've ordered one anyway, I think even if I have to mod the fridge to fit it in, having the ability to put the entire brewlength into one corny will be worth it.
I have 74.5cm of height to play with in my fridge so we shall see!

They look decent.I would go to kegtopia or his ebay store. Has a fair amount of satisfied customers. 94.50 via website normal delivery or via his ebay account for 99 with next day delivery. Both come with quick disconnects. 89.99 if you don't require quick. 25 litres also

I'm getting a few for Xmas that's for sure.

Thanks for the recommend, Malkin! I tried to post that the 25 litre kegs are only 69cm high with QDs attached, so would fit nixhas' kegerator. Think the mods blocked it, 'cos I plugged my own website :-(. Not going to mention it in this post...

Cheers,
Chris
