Its already happening, I was reading this in our local rag earlier 2,500 workers in an area where work is already scarce at least they will get a chance at getting a job ahead of the thousands that will follow once furlough ends.

Around 2,500 workers are set to lose their jobs at builders' merchant Travis Perkins.

The company, which also owns Toolstation and Wickes, said the decision comes as it expects the recession to hit the trade for at least two years.

Bosses plan to close 165 stores - mainly focusing on smaller Travis Perkins sites - also they said there were encouraging signs that building work is returning.
It is not known what sites will close, but the firm has stores in Workington, Cleator Moor, Keswick, Wigton, Brampton, two in Carlisle, Penrith, Millom, Ulverston, Barrow and Kendal.

Although it is unclear how many may close, staff at the Barrow, Carlisle, Blackdyke Road, and Brampton branches said they would definitely remain open.
However, a post on social media showed a letter from the Millom branch telling customers it would be close on Friday.

Your right, its started already. Reported on the Guardian business blog this morning

" Headline news this morning: HSBC will push ahead with 35,000 job cuts, Reuters reports, after getting hold of a memo. The bank is resuming a massive redundancy programme it had put on ice after the Covid-19 outbreak."

Also just spotted the below. For anyone following this thread, we've had quite a discussion on Vit D. Both myself and Chippy now take vit D daily. So this article seems to possibly confirm we may be right to do so

"PHE has acknowledged reports about vitamin D potentially reducing the risk of coronavirus but said there was not enough evidence to support this.

It has since April recommended all people take 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day to maintain bone and muscle health owing to concerns they may not be getting enough sunlight, particularly during the lockdown."

It wasn't that long ago we were discussing how automation will take over millions of jobs (800 million according to BBC news below) looks like we have jumped the gun and mass unemployment is happening now (6.5 million to lose their jobs in the U.K according to the independent) who is going to pay the benefits to all these new unemployed they are not going to find work because so many businesses are closing for good are those left in work to see higher taxes to pay for these poor people who through no fault of their own find themselves jobless.

The current unemployment figure stands at - 1,281,000 million so if they are right we are looking at 7,781,000

Up to 800 million global workers will lose their jobs by 2030 and be replaced by robotic automation, a new report from a consultancy has found.

The study of 46 countries and 800 occupations by the McKinsey Global Institute found that up to one-fifth of the global work force will be affected.

It said one-third of the workforce in richer nations like Germany and the US may need to retrain for other jobs.

Machine operators and food workers will be hit hardest, the report says.

Poorer countries that have less money to invest in automation will not be affected as much, according to McKinsey.

Would they win an election if one was called today?

It's getting into squeaky-bum territory - polls in June have given them leads of 2-8%, Cameron was 20 seats short in 2010 despite a lead of 7.1%, then squeaked a majority in 2015 with a lead of 6.5%, then May was a few seats short with a lead of 2.4% in 2017. Two-party politics reduces the lead you need to have a majority of the seats and the LibDems are currently weak so if you say the current lead is 5% then it's probably just enough to just squeak through - but it's embarassing to have got to that within 6 months of winning an election with 11.5% lead.

Also election campaigns give publicity to opposition leaders who people don't know well, I suspect Starmer would benefit from that.

In fact the polls that look at what party people say they will vote for are not as reliable as the ones that ask about trust in the leader, and the economic competence of the party. They're currently looking worse for Johnson than the main voting intention polls.

I doubt the state will pay for the benefits although not because we cant afford them. Look at how the Banks were bailed out to the tune of £500 billion in 2008

That doesn't prove anything though - the banks weren't actually "gifted" £500bn - although that was the theoretical maximum they didn't use it all, and it was all in the form of loan guarantees, short-term "mortgages" against illiquid assets, and direct investment, buying a percentage of Lloyds & RBS (which were subsequently sold, at a profit in the case of Lloyds and a small loss in the case of RBS). Take the "mortgages" for example - £200bn was made available, of which £185bn was withdrawn against security of £242bn, and all repaid by January 2012.

I wasnt trying to say a cheque was written out for the banks to the tune of 500bn. My point was that money can always be found when the politicians want to

Raab's comments about "Taking the knee" show again a lack of empathy for people, shameful.
Whoever said "Better to keep quiet and let people think you are stupid, than to say something and confirm it." Was correct here.

I cant work out whether this comment by Raab is because he's terminally dense or it's a distraction/dead cat as HMG have been taking a constant pasting recently. Perhaps both?

He's head of the diplomatic service and he makes these comments for no apparent reason. No they're all dense public school boys who enjoy privilege and get on based on who they know not on ability.

Sounds pedantic but it's interesting he called game of thrones, the game of thrones. Its shows he's not in touch with cultural references most people are aware of, and just how clueless he really is

If Johnson was a football manager would he have been sacked by now?
