I would class that as a tropical stout, I am going down the lines of a strong stout with a lager yeast. Dark crystal, special B and chocolate to give it the flavour
Is a porter not classed as a strong dark ale ?

I think Guinness West India Porter was originally so named when Stout Porter was a thing. It was renamed Foreign Extra Double Stout then Foreign Extra Stout at one point. BJCP lists it under the FES category.

The current West Indies Porter is an homage to that original recipe, but it is definitely different to FES (sweeter, more fruity) and think it fits into the Tropical Stout category along with Dragon Stout (a guilty pleasure of mine), Lion Stout, and I'd put Nigerian FES in there too.

Guiness do a foreign extra stout that is no where near a West Indies porter but both are wonderful beers and i marmalade have a few in my fridge.but to me a porter is not a stout.

It was a porter, a stout (strong) porter. So it's a stout in today's parlance.

Like Porterhouse's Plain Porter is clearly a stout (by modern definitions).

But brewed to an old porter recipie tjerefore making it a porter 🤷‍♂️
It's all just semantics and definitions change over time. A man who lived in the middle ages and was 5'6" would be classified as "tall" by old standards, but short by current standards. Was he "tall or short"?

Ultimately, I don't think it matters much. Beer classifications have a lot of overlap and blurry edges - just call it what you think is the most appropriate 👍

I do.
It’s stout
And
It’s porter.
😂😂😂😂👍

I'm in. Hoping to get it brewed sometime this weekend once I free up a fermenting fridge.

Started my tropical stout today. Really curious how this will turn out. I used quite a varied recipe and hope I haven't overdone the flavours.....will post the recipe on my brew thread in a bit. Have gone for Citra hops, first use and they smell amazing! Will def be using these again in a very hoppy brew in the future😋

Just bottled 10L so got 20 bottles.

However can we change it to a Brown Ale competition as that’s what it looked like.

Also kept forgetting to put sugar in, so some might have none and some double 🤣
