If I make a starter, after how long past the use by date do you reckon this could still be viable?

Not long, in my experience… I tried using a Wyeast pack a few weeks past it’s use by date and got nothing from it.
Worth a try though!

Can't get hold of WLP072 (vaults strain) at the mo. There were one or two available here and there, but not at £30 delivery! Anyway, I found a few bottles of an old brew in my garage bottled in June 2020. Put the dregs in a starter last night and it's already active.
On the other hand, some yeasts have the resilience of The Incredible Hulk while others are delicate little flowers.

Yes it is. WLP830 German Lager.
Will give it a go.
