Going back to the original post - where are all the kit brewers? I guess most who are using the forum are bound to be newbies, because it doesn't take long before they realise that kit brewing is so easy, so if they're going to carry on with kits there's not much of interest on here.
Those who hang around are probably those who've switched to AG because there's always something new to find out, and because compared to kit brewing it is so much.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Cwrw. Switching to AG has opened up a whole new world of interest to me. I've read books and articles on yeast, water, different beer styles and recipes and still feel like a complete newb. As well as producing really good beer I find the whole subject fascinating. I'm pretty sure I'd have stopped looking at the forum after a short while had I carried on with kits or maybe just popped on every now and again to check out reviews.

I too blame clibit. He's a terrible influence.

what size stock pot would you recommend?

I used a 15ltr pot for ages doing both methods mentioned in Clibits post.. You also don't need a chiller, you can chill in your kitchen sink using cold water and ice baths. I will probably still use it on smaller batches (use up hops) and partial mashes in the winter.

(apologies for the digression from the OP)

Interested in the drugs then goatboy?!

15 litre is good. Wilko does a 12 litre for about £16, which would be good for partial mashes but would limit AG brews to maybe 8 litres.

God yeah!

I'll have to read up some more on AG and partial mashes.

I'm half way there using DME and the next step I intend to do while lazing about with a few days off at Christmas is 2 partial mash brews using a combination of kit, DME and a 5 litre grain and hops mash per brew topped up to 23l with water.

Think you may have to be banned from any thread with "kit" in the title!!!!!! 😁

 You got to laugh

pms67: where are all the kit brewers??

Kit brewers: Ow do!!!!

clibit: see my thread it's easy

Kit brewers: cool thread I am gonna try that!!

pms67... hello ......??

I'm a kit brewer, only just bottled my second brew, I'm quite happy at the min doing kits, plenty out there to try. As space is a premium a 3 tier system is not viable go me so need to save for a 1 vessel system

Guilty as charged.

As much as I would like to go all grain, the brownie points needed to make the house smell of malt on a regular basis are lacking.

I really like the young's kits I have done. So planning to alternate those with experiments with wilko or coopers kits.

I still do kits, although Clibit's excellent introduction to AG has got me started.... The Youngs and Festival kits give good results, and when wilko has a sale on I'll pick up a couple of wherrys which make a good pint given some extra dme, hops and a couple of months in the bottle. They're just so easy to get a stock on, and so long as there's a steady supply of hoppy IPA in the fourbob household I find I'm free to indulge my hobby.....
.... Which increasingly involves small batch AG brews on the cooker, messing about with different malts and hops. At some point I can see myself investing in some equipment to do bigger batch sizes, but at the moment I'm happy with the balance between kits for quick & easy volume, and 10l AG batches for experimentation, and to learn more about the whole process. Great fun.

I brew kits, and I have tried Clibit's great how to guide a couple of times.
As others have said it is a time thing. Kids seem to take up my weekends with sport, so all I have is evenings after work.
Also, I only started brewing last year. Between a lot of outlay last year, inexperience and no time I am happy to go with the volume of kits rather than switching to small scale AGs because I only have a 15 litre stockpot.
At the moment I am working my way through brewing Festival's Razorback, Citra, Suffolk Ale, Pilgrim's Hope, Landlords Finest & NZ Pilsner, as well as a Wherry (which I will pimp) and Bulldog's 4 Fingered Jack APA. Hopefully I will have a good stock (4 PBs and 150-60 bottles in time for Christmas and then the 6 Nations. 4 beers on tap puts me ahead of many pubs! Kits deliver a reasonable pint, and as long as I stick to the premium ones I can do some good beers.
I will take the leap though, will probably buy a boiler to get the amount up though, in the meantime I just have to justify the price of a Brewfather to my wife.

I've just bottled my 3rd batch (last Thursday), that one was a custom kit created using Get'erBrewed Custom Kit and some extra hops on top of what was chosen for the kit. I don't have much space also currently but going to ask Mrs Santa if I can have a large sized pan so I can do both do kits from Festival, Young's etc. and also my own inventions. Only time will tell if my Fimbulwinter Black IPA has come out well.

Why do you need a large pan to do a festival kit?

I've just ordered a festival kit. I just assumed it would be the same as using any other kit??

You don't.

It is.

But he does mention doing some experimental stuff too.
