I have a Cumberland Ale clone in FV at the moment. Yeasties are working their magic while I'm away on hols. Trying to replicate this one because it's one of my wife's faves on tap. IMHO Cumberland never tastes the same out of a bottle as it does from the cask.


Only ever tried it from the bottle a few times but was never too sold on it.. tasted a little earthy?
 
@Covrich, the recipe I found uses challenger for bittering and aroma. Challenger is supposedly a spicy hop.

I never considered it earthy before, but on reflection I agree, it has a light earthiness. From what I remember it has a smooth and rounded mouthfeel that is quite drinkable.

I'm still learning how to describe the tastes and sensations of ales, so I'm struggling to recall the taste from memory and translate it into the right words.
 
Found this at the back of the fridge. The label's fallen off. It's.......??....kind of lagery in a bitter sort of way

Couple of pints of Batemans Summer Swallow in the local with tea, now having a couple of hobgoblins as I'm 'temporarily home brew embarrassed' (i.e. between brews :beer1:)

Some home made sausage rolls hav3 just come out of the oven so it's a dark Belgian Abbey beer. 9.6% in a 500ml bottle. Think this will be my last tonight. Taking it slowly whilst I wash down some sausage roll
 
Sampling some Norfolk beers to come up with a prize for this month's competition & by gosh I've struck gold! Well technically black!

Smooth as anything this one & I love the subtle smoke. Not picking the orange or coriander listed in the ingredients but feel they be helping to round out the beer as a whole. Delicious in any case!

I got a bit thirsty and as the 6-pack was in the kitchen I went and picked up another bottle.

The best one so far! A bit gassy but after leaving it for fifteen minutes it turned into a beautiful tasting brew.

Maybe
I've found one I want to copy! :thumb:

But with still two more to go, who knows? :laugh8:
 
Don't you just hate smart arses... raspberry IPA this,home made sausage rolls that and just got thirsty the other....and I've just got in from a truly dreadful night shift...with another to look forward to.
don't worry Clint you're time off shift will come... I came off days on Thursday so not back in till Tuesday night for 2 1/2 of them. I won an attendance award... so my prize is... half a shift off! :rolleyes:
 
I decided on a lunchtime brew and managed to get the cap off this one ...

It was surprisingly nice! Not too gassy, very mellow taste and very "moorish"! It will just beat The Bomber IF I can generate a Yeast Starter from the dregs!

On the label it states "Bottle Conditioned" and looking at the bottom of the bottle I saw a very fine film of what looked like yeast so:
  • I sanitised a small jar, lid and spinner.
  • Added two teaspoonful of Holland and Barrett Malt Extract to the jar.
  • Added about 300ml of boiled water.
  • Swirled it around until the ME was mixed with the water.
  • Poured the dregs of the "Pedigree" into the jar.
  • Put the lid back on the jar very loosely.
  • Put in on the Stir Plate.
The end result looked like this ...

Over the next 72 hours or so (the worktop is at 20*C at the moment) it should go a nice cream colour as the yeast starts to proliferate.

If that happens, I intend to do a 4.5 litre brew using the rest of the Holland and Barrett ME and finishing with a Hop Tea using 25g Perle Hops before bottling.

Got loads planned for next block off ...desperate to brew,stocks dwindling. Hope to get two on. Got to do curry gravy for my "curry quest". Plus clear out a section of poly tunnel and plant it up again ..
