My first beer today is a dark lager. It’s very roasty but there’s not really much else going on, a bit one-dimensional.

Utopian Bohemian British Lager. Have had, and enjoyed, most of Utopian's offerings but this one had eluded me until now.

Light honey, hay, spice and slight sulphur on the nose. Taste is bready, a low level sweetness and a bit of spice. A fairly bitter, dry finish.

Small sample of Bière de Garde. It's clear but this ***** of a glass makes it look a bit opaque.

Dubbel. Lovely. Dark, rich, dry. Tastes of dark molasses and malt. Then more malt. It's a shame I didn't have a fire to sit this next to.

Definitely a sipper.

Yesterday I had a pint of Hogs Back Nirvanah IPA.
Way too citrusy for my taste & reminded me why I don't use hops that list 'citrus' in their characteristics

After a week of enforced sobriety (antibiotic related) I’ve been let loose in Drogheda, Co. Louth.

First up tonight was a local Pale Ale. Great job on the hops, but at 4.5% you need to plump up the grain bill. But nice pint all in all.

Next up was a hotel Guinness, can’t fault it.

Then we had some of these, in a bar nearby that scored 8.4 from the Guinness Guru. Definitely a step up

Then these were supposed to be the nightcap
