Hello all,
the general starting instructions with can kits seems to be..heat the can to soften malt then put 3 litres of boiling water in the fv,mix all the ingredients thoroughly then top up to 23l. Thus assuming the hot/cold dilution rate should give a near suitable temperature for pitching the yeast..?
I've just measured my mains cold temp..it's 18c! At a guess doing the above I'll be well over..any advice please?

regards

Just let it cool for a couple of hours.
You can also boil some water a few days before and make ice blocks with it. Using plastic tupaware that is boiled with it to sanitize it. Then dump it in.

18c? Wow that's warm! Hang on, my water is about 18c too. And you have the same location on your profile (North Wales). Don't fetch your water from Llyn Brenig do you? If so, don't worry, it'll be below 10c by November. I have the same trouble using a swanky counterflow chiller. I get down to 19-21c and have to go with that. Actually 19-21c is great for fermentation.

English readers will be surprised, they'll think "North Wales, the reservoirs haven't defrosted yet have they?". They'll also read my comment "fetch your water" and take it as confirmation that we haven't got taps yet.

Thanks all! I think our water comes from the Dee...The Coopers stout is in the fv now..started with 2l of boiling water to dissolve the can and spraymalt, topped up with cold. Temp 24c which isn't too far away..will wait a bit before pitching although the instructions say up to 27c is ok.

Yes my water also warm, I found last kit started at 20.8°C when I did my best to use as little hot water as I could get away with. You need some hot water to get the concentrate out of the can. I am lucky I have a freezer compartment which the fermentor fits in to so I can cool it to what ever temperature I set.

However there are other ways to cool a brew, wet towels and a simple fan do work even today where it is 21.2°C outside even if it is raining. I did stop brewing in the Summer but now I have restarted using a fridge/freezer, in the past I found summer brews needed longer in the bottle to condition.

I thought it had to stop raining to freeze

Thanks for the tips...had a couple of wet teatowels in with the fishfingers for a while then wrapped them round the fv. Temp now 22/24c so be pitching soon...then to make up some really wild stories about why I haven't been to the supermarket and done other stuff...instead of "messing about" all day! I love messing about...be setting fire to some meat later and popping some Ringwood ipa...Oh sg was 1.040, pack said 1.038 so ok.

Hoy. Less lip. At least we can freeze over here whereas the Satan lives too close to the surface of your heathen land.

On the subject of which... We have a very nice chap on our side who I'm sure we can persuade to share one of there beers with you . (They'll never guess the "account name" roughly translates to "Devil's brew").

EDIT: little blunder in my reference to "Devil's brew"... (err... this frog costume you gave me, how do I get it off?)
