Hi all. I'm currently on my 3rd homebrew. It's a Youngs American IPA. At primary at the mo but I wasn't paying attention and cut open the wrong pack and put the hops in instead of the yeast. I managed to fish out the majority of the hops and put the yeast in. My question is, will the hops be reusable. They were only in the wort for about 2 minutes so took on a bit of liquid. Have I saved them in time?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks all

You might get away with it if you put them straight into a sterile container and keep them sealed in the freezer. Otherwise, the YAIPA comes with 100g of Simcoe, Centennial and Chinook. You could get a 100g pack of similar American hops, such as citra, and use them instead. A good choice could be Falconers Flight 7Cs if you can get your hands on them, as they contain Centennial and Chinook, as well as a blend of other hops which would match the style very well.

Thanks for the replies guys. The main thing I wanted to check is if the brew would still be ok. I checked it this morning and it's got a layer of almost hop cake on top of the yeast bubbles. It's obviously going through it's fermenting stage but I haven't seen this cake layer before. I'm assuming that's from the hop error?

Probably a mixture of krausen and hop debris.. it will be fine.. it wont ruin it.

I'm wondering if some/all of the hops could be re-used by way of dry-hopping.....I'd sterilize them first by boiling /steaming for a very short while.....say 5-10mins, long enough to kill off any nasties but short enough so that the flavour / aroma would still be there....anyone else think this would be a way to avoid wasting them?

Thanks for the advice Chuffer, but I've just bought some Falconers Flight hops and from the description they look ideal for American IPA's.

Note to self....pay attention to what your doing.
