.... Symphonic Rock.

Morten Veland really shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a microphone, but it's his band and he'll growl at one occasionally if he wants to.

I was given an i-Tunes voucher card for Christmas, to the value of about two albums, so I went and downloaded a couple I had wanted for a while, one pop and one folk-rock. Then I went to see if another personal favourite had released anything new. They hadn't, but I made the mistake of starting clicking on the “listeners also bought....” links, found something else I was seriously impressed by and bought that, clicked on another link and was blown away, so I had to buy a fourth. Had that been on vinyl I would have worn the grooves out by now, so I've now had to go back and download another album from that 4th band.

So, take one long haired, bearded Norwegian heavy metal guitarist (he might look part troll but he's actually a rather good writer/composer/arranger and talented multi-instrumentalist). Add some more guitars, some big drums and a thumping bass line. Now add a piano, some strings and occasional woodwinds. Recruit a choir (experience of Latin an advantage). Add the self-harmonising voices of a Spanish ‘El Factor X’ 4th round reject, and what do you get?

I think they make a pretty good noise, see what you think, here are Sirenia with “Path to decay” from the album “The 13th Floor” and “The end of it all” from the album “The Enigma of Life”. I think there are better tracks on both albums but they aren't on YouTube.

If you like those, you could also try some Finnish operatic metal from Nightwish - “Sleeping Sun” or “I wish I had an angel”
Or you could go Dutch: Within Temptation - “The Howling” and “What have you done now?”, both from the album “The Heart of Everything”.

I assume that everyone already knows Evanescence.

I would be obliged if anyone can point me to anything else in a similar vein.

Italian with a bit of Lacuna coil?

Leaves eyes, not sure where they are from ?

Sabaton do some great tracks but not really that operatic :hmm:

This week I have mainly been listening too....Mastodon

Female fronted metal generally makes my ears cry

That said, here's a band with a singer that often sounds like a girl - assuming you've heard of Coheed and Cambria? Some of their stuff is pretty soundtrack, definitely in the "epic" catagory anyway.

I think you have to sort of get into the band to tolerate how mish mashed it is and what the music is all about. It'd be pretty easy to find it generic if you don't check out the lyrics, comic book content etc :)

Failing that, spotify brings up;

Tristania, Epica, Delain, After Forever, Lunatica, Theatre of Tragedy, Tarja, Eluveitie, Kamelot...

On my guitar teachers recommendation I have just bought Dokken Original Album Series, and am mostly listening to the amazing George Lynch . . . and will have to check out Lynch Mob, the band he set up after leaving Dokken . . .which is sort of like Dokken but Better :D

(The 5 Lynch Dokken albums are
Dokken, Tooth An Nail, Under Lock And Key, Back For The AttacK and The Beast From The East)

Moley if i was you make a copy(on disc) of your downloads i will never again download as some times they have a end of use date and you can no longer play them or worse you pc goes bad and you lose what you've got , i once (about 4 years ago ) bought many downloads and lost the lot after about a year or so , maybe things have improved but maybe not , just a thought mate :thumb:

Things are better now. If you buy a download you can usually download it again for free (at least with apple I think).

I have been listening to a lot of Melvins recently and all thoughs that have been infuenced by them. Getting into metal at the moment and loving it!!!

metal , try metallica or good old iron maiden i was a rocker back in the late eighties and nineties ,no longer as i love many types (still at heart though) plus im bald

Used to listen to Metallica years ago but not so much now but there is always time for the mighty Maiden!!!

Dont know what you listen to pittsy but you should check out Rodrigo y Gabriela. They were in a mexican heavy metal band but now just play acoustic. They are amazing and well worth seeing live if you enjoy it. Start with there selftitled as it has a great cover of Metallics Orion.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've only just found time to check them out though.

I don't really do metal unless it has got the warbly side, and I want an altogether bigger all round sound.

Of those, Leaves' Eyes are right up my street, I'll pass on the rest.

My library is fully backed up, in duplicate, stored in separate locations.
