That’s right it was.
Thanks for the reminder...
I had noticed that they had recently released a new album, but I didn’t get around to actually listening to it.
It’s fantastic. Despite the curious discord of some of the instruments, it’s mesmerising to listen to.
They always have a new album out - I think they are on 17 studio albums, 3 live albums and a rarities compilation and they only formed in 2010.
If you like Gizzard you should check out the Psychadelic **** Crumpets. They are another Australian psych-rock band, and are a lot like a gizzard in lances, but have less of the prog/World influences and also give off Jane’s Addiction and The Beatles vibes. Their new album “SHYGA!” is excellent.
I’ve also just run my Apple Replay analytics for the year so far. A couple of surprises in there, my top 10 most listened to albums of 2021 are as follows. The ones that didn’t appear in my original list have a little description next to them:
1. Jeremy Pinnel - Ties of Blood and Affection
2. Frank Turner - Sleep is for the Week
3. Hirie- Dreamer. I’m surprised this is at number 3. They are a pop-reggae band fronted by the very beautiful Trish who I discovered through a recent Sublime tribute album. Poppier than I would usually go for but very chilled and cool(perfect for working from home which is probably how it’s so high on my list). There’s an appearance from Jurassic 5’s Chali 2Na on this record too for added cool points.
4. Weezer - OK Human. I think this is Weezer’s best album in 15 years+. A bit of a departure from anything they’ve done before, it uses only chamber/orchestra instruments - no guitars.
5. Steve Earle & The Dukes - JT. Steve Earle’s tribute to his son (songwriter Justin Townes Earle) who died last year, who was one of my favourite songwriters. It’s very good - he puts his own spin on the tracks.
6. Austin Lucas - Alive in the Hot Zone
7. Van Darien - Levee. Alt-country/country-rock type stuff with a bit of an indie-pop twist
8. Psychadelic **** Crumpets - SHYGA
9. Aubrie Sellars - New City Blues. Alt-country with blues, garage rock and early 00s indie-rock influences.
10. Justin Townes Earle - Harlem River Blues. JTE is one of my favourite songwriters, he manages to make music that simultaneously sounds old fashioned and super fresh. If KG’s Nonagon Infinity is my favourite album of the 2010s, this one is probably 2nd.
