Just went to ASDA. Things slowly seem to be getting back to normal after the shelf stripping of the past week. Plenty of fruit and veg, etc, no massive queue at the till, no scrums . No meat though (not that it bothers me). My guess is the beserker panic buyers have now filled up their fridges, freezers and cupboards

You may be lucky M its still going on see above.

Supermarkets have gone on a hiring spree as demand surges as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

Tesco, Asda, Aldi, and Lidl said they would hire thousands of staff after hugely increased demand saw shoppers clearing shelves.

That move came before the government said it would pay the wages of workers at firms affected by the pandemic.

And Sainsbury's has asked shoppers to stay 1m away from shop staff if possible, to help keep them safe.

Supermarkets have been overwhelmed by a wave of panic-buying as shoppers rush to stock up amid the coronavirus pandemic.

To combat the stockpiling, in recent days the major British supermarkets imposed limits on how much of each item shoppers can buy.

Along with other measures to cope with the increased demand, some of the chains have embarked on big recruitment drives for a total of more than 30,000 jobs.

Tesco, the UK's biggest supermarket, wants to take on 20,000 temporary workers "to help feed the nation", it said.

"The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in an unprecedented increase in demand for food and household products," the chain said.

"At Tesco, we're working around the clock to help ensure families have access to the shopping items they need.

"We launched our recruitment drive online on Wednesday and since then we have already been overwhelmed by support from the public and thank everyone who has applied to work with us in stores."

It added that "over the coming days thousands of new colleagues will join us".

The chain also announced on Saturday it will give all its workers across stores, distribution centres and customer engagement centres a 10% bonus on their hourly rate until 1 May - backdated to 9 March.

Frontline salaried managers will receive a 10% bonus on actual hours worked, it added.

Asda said it wanted to recruit more than 5,000 temporary staff from among people whose jobs have been impacted by the virus.

All those people wandering around London need to read this if they're not scared. They will be after reading it. Years of not funding the NHS properly have resulted in this:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/mar/21/nhs-junior-doctor-stay-at-home-coronavirus
"Now, we only swab people sick enough to come into hospital, which means we’ll have a falsely low number of confirmed cases. Meanwhile, the government continues to downgrade the quality of personal protective equipment (PPE) worn by NHS staff. Initially, we were wearing FFP3s, high-grade masks filtering out 99% of particles smaller than 0.6 microns, to see any patient with suspected Covid-19. Pretty quickly, demand exceeded supply. Suddenly, entire wards were set up purely for Covid-19 patients. On 11 March, we were informed there wasn’t sufficient evidence supporting the wearing of FFP3s. Instead, PHE advised “basic respiratory precautions”, like with flu. Now we are wearing the most basic surgical masks and a tissue-thin plastic apron to see entire wards of confirmed cases. "

Still been manic at mine today I have put restrictions on Eggs, Beer, Toilet Rolls, Pasta, nappies, Kitchen roll and Wet wipes for kids. I left at 12.30pm and only Beer left and that will be gone by end of play although it does seem to have gone a bit quieter but chances are it will get busy in the afternoon as people come out for beer

I also went at 8am this morning (only went just now because I forgot advacados). It was like your piccy above. They had installed a queueing system. When I arrive the queue was from the the from door all the way around the edge of the carpark. The queue must have been 1/4 mile long. I've never seen anything like it. Comparing that with just now it, now looks like a normal saturday arvo but with some shelves (like the aforementioned meat section) empty bu mostly OK

I think as was said demand exceeding supply is the problem its like hand gel once it all went in the early stages it was impossible to get stocks back they are now asking distillers to help, i don't know if “basic respiratory precautions” are good enough but assume they will get more FFP3 as soon as they can but with demand so high that could take a while,

I hope they get the PPE they need because if they don't, many, many Dr's and Nurses will get it which will turn in to massive disaster as there wont be enough of them to treat the rest of us that get it

Shoppers in the UK have been told to "be responsible" and think of others such as NHS workers, after panic-buying amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Environment Secretary George Eustice said there is more than enough food to go around - but the challenge for shops is keeping shelves stocked.

It comes as supermarkets have been overwhelmed by increased purchasing.

Meanwhile, cafes, pubs and restaurants across the UK have closed as part of measures to stop the virus spreading.

"Frankly we should all be ashamed," said Stephen Powis, medical director at NHS England, who said panic buyers are depriving NHS staff of the supplies they need.

Earlier this week, a video of a nurse urging panic-buyers to think about others was shared widely.

All part of that myth making, were all in it together, blitz spirit ********. Even the queen was at it yesterday, urging the UK to 'work as one' before she buggered off to here fortified palace at Windsor with a regiment of coldstream guards at the bottom of the drive to keep the plebs out

They have announced on 5 live that we have £1billion more goods in our houses than we did a week ago ashock1

I hope the panic buying selfish scum are proud of their new record.

Wish I had a billion quids worth of goods in my house. I'd be straight on to ebay. Mind you I'd need a bigger house :laugh8:

I’ve yet to face the shops, but thankfully have long being in the habit of buying stuff I don’t need so have several years worth of purchases of random dried goods to use up.

As for panic buying the Extent of it for me is getting my next home brew order in now rather than towards the end of April/early May (As concerned a lot of the suppliers will have to close before too long).

I saw this on twitter earlier i wonder how long a pie shop will be classed as essential.

The GREGGS bakery chain has offered to provide frontline emergency service staff with free drinks during the Coronavirus outbreak.

A spokesman for the chain said: '"Greggs has a long-standing history of supporting the communities that we serve."

To get the free drink, those working in the frontline will be asked to show their work pass as proof of their profession.

Greggs added that it would keep it shops open for as long as possible but this depended on Government advice.
