I live in Aberdeenshire where face coverings in shops are mandatory. I went out today and on Friday. Everyone had a covering and it isn’t a big deal.

When you wear one it’s not a natural everyday thing to do, so it does make you aware that the “Virus” is still out there. It also focusses your mind on social distancing and hand hygiene.

It may stop some of the “Bullet Proof Mentality” if it is adopted in England.

Wearing a mask has quickly become something you do without thinking like the stereotypical old codger putting on his cap before stepping out of the house. For some it's a fashion statement. It has never been compulsory in the shops or open air, but more and more people seem to be choosing to do the "fashionable" and socially acceptable thing. Went to an open air exhibition yesterday, plenty of people, all being sensible, about three quarters wearing masks. It's a ball ache wearing a mask when you've got a beard, but you soon get used to it. Can't really see why people wouldn't want to take precautions unless they're of Flat Earther or Climate Change Denyer sort of types.

My brother prefers a visor. Are these common in England? (I live in a remote part of Scotland.)

Wearing masks was mandatory in Spain, Italy and Germany 4 months ago why are we so late with everything? If compulsory in shops and public transport then why not in hair dressers, gyms, pubs etc. It's only two days since Gove said we shouldn't wear masks. The public need leadership and clear unambiguous messages not vague statements.

I tend to go walking in the early morning basically no one about so just keep, my face mask in my pocket ready for when I am nearing the newsagent to pick up a paper.

I’m not going to deny that I don’t part enjoy wearing one (especially since it seems to steam up my glasses) thus why I will continue getting online grocery orders to minimise the amount of time I need to wear one, as whether I like it or not the evidence seems to demonstrate that face masks if worn by all do reduce the rates of transmission.

If they had brought it in 3 months ago you would have been here saying people should have the choice whether to wear them or not with you they cannot win and your constant nitpicking is getting boring have you noticed no one bothers to answer you any more, time to let it drop and move on I think.

This forum is for opinions and that's what I'm giving. I would not have d people should have a choice, that allowing choice doesn't work.

Honestly making masks compulsory now is shutting the stable door when the horse is several counties away.

On the other hand, you'll probably enjoy less being intubated in intensive care. Think of it that way.

Top tip for glasses - stick down the top edge of the mask with micropore tape.
Oh I’m not saying I won’t wear one, (I do and have being for some weeks) that said as I understand the primary benefit it not in preventing you from catching it but in reducing the possibility of you spreading it to others hence why I agree with making it mandatory as it’s impact would be minimal if we do not see the overwhelming majority of people wearing them in public places. I’m not a fan of taking a taxi back from a pub, or walking back in the rain, but I understand and accept that driving under the influence of alcohol doesn’t just increase the risk to myself but to every other person on the road.

Just got back from Lidl and there is a massive increase in the number of people wearing mask. It was usually me and no more than two others. Today at least 25-30% of people , more than 30 wearing them. Tell people clearly what they must do and the vast majority will comply. Also if it is explained the it is for others good then that will help.

Please edit your comment as it appears to be garbled? I would like to understand your point.

The predicted second wave has not started maybe this will help stop it being as awful as it has been predicted to be (120,000 U.K deaths) would you rather they didn't make us all wear them on public transport and where we cannot keep a safe distance and just let us get on with spreading it, i can imagine what the Tory haters would have to say on that one.

Coronavirus infections could grow "out of control" in the UK with a second spike leading to 120,000 deaths in a "reasonable worst-case scenario", ministers have been warned.

The forecast counts the number of people who could die in hospitals before next June and comes from a report commissioned by Sir Patrick Vallance, the government's chief scientific adviser, released by the Academy of Medical Sciences.

It suggests a second spike could be more serious than the first, with the R rate - the average number of people someone with COVID-19 passes the virus on to - rising to 1.7 from September.

The current R number in the UK is 0.7-0.9.

yup I prefer not to mix with the great unwashed and remove myself from risky situations all together. I do not talk when out and if I do I point my gob away from for the person I need to respond to. I generally shake or nod my head or use gestures, so this generally has the effect of people giving me a wide berth :laugh8: Some places its safe to distance and I avoid those where it's not. e.g. The Range was terrible when I went yesterday not going back there again. So i'd rather not wear a mask as naturally those places where it helps others are the places where I'm at increased risk of getting it. E.g. public transport.

I have been wearing a mask on the few times I have ventured into shops since the start of lockdown. I consider this a very small price to pay if it helps contain this virus. Can't see how any sensible person could object unless they have a genuine health reason for not wearing it.

We discussed this at work earlier and you wouldn't believe the number of people who still think face covering is to prevent you from catching it not to stop you spreading it. aheadbutt

I'd rather they'd have done it almost four months ago when lockdown started. How it's taken them this long to figure it out is a mystery.
