... Rod, I don't understand what you're issue is, apart from apparently disliking the guy because of the amount of money he has :?: ... he's not suggesting we give committed dates or anything, he's just suggesting that we should have some guidelines/policy description that would help to define how the decision about unlocking the lockdown will be made.

We all develop policies/frameworks for making complicated decisions all of the time ... as brewers we decide whether we'll just leave the ferment for two weeks or ferment until gravity is stable for more than two days ... as tomato growers we might decide when to pick the fruits on the basis of how red they are ... as buyers of stocks and shares we know we want to buy low and sell high, but we have to make decisions as to how low is low enough to buy ... so ALL Starma is asking the Government is to give us an idea of what basis the decisions will be made to start lifting restrictions. Do we wait till there's fewer than X deaths per day, or fewer than X new cases being identified per day, or what? Or is it just till Boris thinks "Now!"?

We keep being told that the Gov is being led by the scientists on this, and scientists will just about always develop their methods for coming to decisions first ... so why should explaining the mechanisms for deciding this be so difficult?

I for one would feel much more comfortable being told (just as a for instance) "lockdown measures will continue until new cases identified per day fall below 1000, when the first phase of removing lockdown measures (re-opening schools) will commence", rather than the current stance of "we'll all stay in lockdown until we say so" :?:

Cheers, PhilB
Ok Phil i will concede on some sort of clarity but i feel it is to soon and people will start to think its over when its not thats the last thing we need, as for my political leanings i am not Left right centre or any other, i would like to see a mis mash of all the good mps coming together in in westmonster a dream i know, i just dont like Starmer and how he comes across

Unfortunately BJ got rid of all the Conservative ones like Oliver Letwin and Ken clarke and replaced them with much less experienced Brexit ultras

More Boris derangement syndrome. Many, if not most, of the current cabinet were remainers. Ken Clarke didn't even stand at the last election, FFS, and hadn't been in any cabinet of any colour for bloody ages.

But, yea, 'brexit ultras, innit?' or space aliens or Trump or something.....

ha - I bought my new car a few days before lockdown. whilst I can't go abroad in it to pick up Belgian beery treats I can at least sit in it and enjoy that new car smell 🤣

I saved a fortune ;)

So BJ didnt withdraw the whip from 21 MP's for backing a bid to block a no deal brexit and replaced them all with yes men/women? As I say experienced mps who could help steer the government through the current crisis.

This debate is surreal.

Now, apparently, Boris is wrong for insisting (in the last parliament) that his MP's obey the whip, which is, er, how the whipping system works and has worked for millennia.

What on earth that has to do with Corona God almighty knows. But it does, because of Boris or space aliens or Trump or something.

Yes, it's how the whipping system works but MPs defy the whip 'all the time'. It not withdrawn from them if they defy it. Corby defied the Labour whip 428 times and he became leader (does this say something about the Labour party?)

Hi Rod

... I disagree, I think like Chippy suggests people are already starting to think it's all over (or if they're not now, they soon will) ... whereas if you give them some indication as to how they'll "know" when it's over (or beginning to be over, at least) then at least you can give them something to look forward to, something to focus on ... every parent knows that the "because I say so" excuse is the worst reason to give and should only be used as a last resort (e.g. "you're not driving my car, because I say so") ... the reasoned explanation is better, but will only get you so far ("because you're too young to drive") ... explaining the "targets" for being able to get what they're after is better still ("you'll be able to drive when you old enough to get a licence and have passed your test and can pay for the insurance") ... and getting them involved by setting them active goals is better still ("if you really want to drive my car, then you should get on with reading the highway code and preparing to apply for your licence and get through your theory exam").

The UK Government is currently concentrating on the because I say so approach (with the legislation put in place to fine people) and a bit of the reasoned explanation with the "Save the NHS" and "Flattening the Curve" talk. Keir Starmer is simply suggesting that they should try "taking the discussion to the next level" :?:

Cheers, PhilB

P.S. To be clear, I am not making the above statement from a party-political nor a Leave/Remain stance, I just think what he's suggesting seems like a very sensible approach.
