Each time I sterilise my brewing equipment, I always rinse it afterwards with cold water, usually twice. I've just watched a DVD about home brewing and the bloke says that it's not necessary to rinse. Is that right? It takes me an age to do, especially if I'm doing a bunch of bottles or a FV!

That really depends on what you are using to sterilise.

If you are using something like a multi-p cleaner/steriliser - then RINSE!

If you are cleaning with something like Soda Crystals, RINSE.

If you are sterlilising with videne, use it at the no-rinse dilution 1.25ml/L then let it run out and you will be fine :thumb:

that all depends on what steralising solution your using. If its Viadine then there isnt any need to rince.

Just to add....if used at the correct dilution which is 1.25ml/L ;) or 5ml per 4L which is much easier to measure :thumb:

If the DVD is American then they're probably using Star san, which at a price you can buy over here.

Hop & Grape I think :thumb:

Thats the one Wez, couldn't remember if was BB or H&G.

Think I'll stick to choking to death of VWP :(

Seriously, try the Soda Crystals or OXY to clean (see Tubbys cornie cleaning how to) and videne for sterilising. You'll save a fortune.

Videne is available from the chemist, the pharmacy in my local ASDA get it for me for £4.50 per 500ml

Another vote for Videne.

The problem with rinsing after sterilising is that your tap water isnt sterile. So you're washing your nice sterile kit with water that isnt sterile..... makes no sense.

Agreed!

How scarey is the first brew though where you dont rinse  I shat my pants.

To get the ratio right with videne, I use a baby medicine syringe. Works really well for me :thumb:

maybe thats why most of my kits didn`t taste quite right :hmm:

Im not trying to start a argument or anything here, just trying to point out that there is nothing wrong with using tap waterto rince after steralising or using in brewing. So rick, what water did you use for your ginger beer and wines? and how do they taste?

very true - all my ginger beer and wine brews are made with untreated tap water - and all taste great - i use a sodium metasulphite powder for all my sanitising needs and then rinse with tap water, haven`t had a problem so far :thumb:
