Square fermenter

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could purchase a square vessel suitable for fermenting in? I know you can purchase such equipment from the local HBS but they are far too expensive.

I need something to fit my ferm cupboard/single bottle fridge and think with a snug fit I could get 50ltr's for the little yeasties to chomp away at. I can fit taps etc so the vessel is the important bit.

That should pose no real issue, they managed for hundreds of years in yorkshire, and some still do, plenty of commercial brewers still brew in s/s squares now.

I should try a local engineering/fabrication firm and get one knocked up, it might not be that expensive if you flash the pound notes, & you will be able to get one to fit your fridge, by supplying the dimensions yourself.

Someone on ar Irish forum has some of the large storage boxes that he uses as fermentors. Think they were food grade, but not sure where he got them from.

Ikea have quite a few polypropylene square shaped tubs.

Obviously they dont state 'food grade' but there isnt much to leach out of PP with water as a solvent

I've used one as a FV with no problems

Hmm, wonder if these would be ok up to 70 deg c? (anyone?) Thinking mash tun (with insulation of course).

Another suggestion as a square fermentor would be the good old "Belfast Sink"

Easy to clean too, bit heavy though.

According to the source of all truth http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polypropylene even really poor quality stuff shouldnt melt until 130deg, should be 150+
