Morning all,

Any tips on sanitising bottles?

I always bottle my home brew and currently use a simple but super long technique below.

Clean bottles with brush hard surface cleaner
Rinse under tap
Put in bath full of milton/bleach leave for 20mins
(bath clean!!!!)
rinse under tap again

I bought a bottle washer that fits onto a tap yesterday to speed up the cleaning & rinsing process... surely there must be a betterway?

I haven't found one yet, my method is similar to your own, wash/brush with a regular washing-up liquid, rinse, total immersion in FV of mild bleach, rinse twice, drain upside down.

However, I only do a dozen or so at a time, cover the top with tinfoil and stand them in my ready-to-go (milk) crates. Same with wine bottles if I know I'm going to be filling them within a couple of weeks.

Buy a black Dustbin, fill with water bleach mixture . . . put bottles into bin . . . remove a week later . . . rinse, dry and cap with silver foil . . . box for storage . . . when ready to use spray inside with no rinse sanitiser, invert to drain most of sanitiser . . . and use

Videne (there are 2 versions of it - you want the antiseptic one) seems to be a favourite on here. You can get Boots to order it in for you, then you can collect it form the store when it has arrived. :thumb:

I think you can also make milton into a no rinse solution :wha:

I've herd about the vidine and tried to get it at my local pharmacy and was told I need a prescription for it!! :wha:

I got videne last month no problems from local chemist asked in the morning they got it delivered for 4;30 the same day.

Guess my chemist doesn't like homebrewing :nono:

But just done a interweb search and found it for £3.50 inc free del :thumb:

There's two answers to this question.

1. Any bottles where i have consumed the product, I simply rinse them 3 to 4 times with cold water, drain, and put away.
At bottling time, I just give them a quick rinse with iodophor (or any other no rinse sanitiser), and they're ready to use.

Some of my bottles have been reused about 40 times this way, with no problems at all.

2. Any other bottles, where you are not sure of their history, it seems like the process you described will be necessary prior to the first time you use the bottles. From then on, step 1. should be all you'll need.

DO NOT USE MILTON!!

It has 'cling' capability far surpassing any ability to rinse . . . and as its chlorine based will taint your beer (TCP) . . . Thin bleach (Preferably unscented, although at the levels we are using it it doesn't really matter) or even domestos used at the rate of 15ml of Bleach mixed in to 5 gallons of water and then (AND ONLY THEN) add 15ml of white vinegar . . . makes a very cheap no rinse solution.

For cleaning 60ml of Domestos in 5L (or 270ml of thin bleach) does the trick on pretty much anything . . . but requires considerable rinsing . . . minimum contact time is 20 minutes.

I always used bleach and as the previous poster said, my bottling sessions were a world of pain. Even plain bleach is horribly clingy. Now I thoroughly rinse bottles immediately after use and on bottling day make up a couple of litres of no rinse sanitiser (I use Starsan) and rinse and shake bottles in that and bottling day is a breeze now.

Starsan foams a fair bit but is phosphate based (I think it's the same phosphates that go into Coca Cola) so is a good yeast nutrient as well as being tasteless and odourless. As they say "do not fear the foam" :D

Coca Cola (at least in .uk) contains Phosphoric acid.

Otherwise known in the industry as beerstone cleaner!

Sorry it was £3.50 plus vat so it was £4.03 :thumb:

I just ordered it from: My Foot Care Supplies :thumb:

Got mine other day! came in a big enough box!!!

Got a email from them today saying 'Further to a recent order you placed with us, please could you kindly let me know your HPC Registration Number for our records' :wha:
