Self-service checkouts

I'll take self service anytime over the check out at Lidl - a race between you and the cashier as they chuck it through as quick as humanly possible.

We like that idea . That is the continental model. Out of trolley back in trolley ASAP.
Sort / pack on the shelf at the back or straight into bags at the car boot (my choice).

But we don't shop very often.

Morrisons petrol station this morning.I prefer to go to the till instead of pay at pump.
I waited 5 minutes for pump to be authorised,i went into shop and shouted hello!! Looked at side where gas is and no one.
Eventually she turned up,said was sorting papers.The pump ping thing in shop was pinging like mad and she must have ingored it.
So maybe self service has its merits

Big fan of Lidl to for a big shop. Zero self-service tills, efficient and friendly staff on till (can't remember a single problem). They are also quick to open up tills and close them down when not needed. They put the food through really quickly, but I don't mind that as it makes it much quicker than I could do it. And the food is decent but cheaper than a lot of the others.

I think self service has gone far to far and makes little sense for a big shop. That said, it works well in the Tesco express next to my work, primarily because most of what the sell is sandwiches etc.

I fling it from the boxes into a bag for life, then to the kit hen and away. Quicker than trying to juggle everything.

That's what we do, although we get 2 small shops a week delivered and not a months worth. We refuse to let the delivery driver put the crates inside the house. Once a ASDA driver went to put the crate inside and scraped the plaster on the wall, ASDA had to pay for the repair and paint the hall, stair case and all up stairs landing. Result

But we don't shop very often.

Just take a load of large bags and you can sort it on the conveyor belt and when packing. One of the advantages of moving away from those smaller plastic carrier bags. I sort of treat it like a challenge to accurately sort the stuff at the speed they put stuff through (realise this is very sad )

Aldi kington park run mainly on self scan or did, I stopped going because it was the absolute worst ive come across, the tollerances on the weight of stuff must be so small as it seemed every other item would set it off, on the opposite end Ive never yet had an issue with the M&S self scan

Everything is pushed back to the customer. Banking, checkouts, download billing, read you own meters. A lot of services we pay for are now self service!

Nice to see some push back.
I do think that's one of the reasons lidl & Aldi are doing so well.

As an aside on the Tesco delivery, we live in a Bungalow and the kitchen is next to the front door.
We book it so that 2 of us are in.

Take the crates off the guy, dump it on the kitchen sides. Give him the crates back. We're definitely not holding him up. It takes longer for him to load the boxes from the van that it does for us to unload.

Packing it into bags for life would take at least twice as long as just launching it on the work surfaces.

Anyhow, they love playing with the dog It's the highlight of her week. She gets super excited when the Tesco man pulls up.

Our nearest lidl as self check out.

Our local Lidl removed 2 or 3 checkouts and replaced them with 16 self checkouts. Also you had to scan a receipt to be able to exit the checkout area.

Last time I went in though only half of them were functioning, meaning there was a queue.

I don’t use them as it is denying someone a job.

Nonsense. The usual stuff about technology taking over. The reality is just the opposite. Tomorrows world back in tbr ‘80’s promised us a 3 day working week as computers took the strain. An example of BBC fake news dating back to the late ‘70’s

The reality is there are more and more people working in retail and supermarkets because of new technology like this. The rise of Tesco express and their ilk is only possible because of self service checkouts meaning small shops are viable as you’re not taking up space for checkouts.

Also the convenient element means more shops and realestate is created boosting the number of employees. Yes they’re employed doing different jobs but they’re employed.

Even the advent of Amazon where shop fronts have been removed altogether has resulted in a huge army of people needed to be employed in warehouses and delivery to make the service work.
