These new cameras can see if you are on the phone, not wearing a seatbelt, driving under the influence etc.

Will new AI cameras improve road safety or will they be a major pita when they flag drivers trying to dodge potholes and flooded roads?

Joking aside cameras scanning the inside of cars has raised the usual arguments about privacy do you think these are a good or bad idea?

As one post said -
Now they have a reason to stop you without having a reason " we've stopped you because you've been flagged by AI"

I'm not sure why eating and drinking is a thing.

The Police have confirmed many times that it's not illegal, although if you were to lose your concentration, you could be done for careless driving.
But it's highly unlikely.

This was the first video i saw and he mentions eating and drinking but in the video in the OP it doesn't, maybe he means if you caused an accident they could look back at the camera footage and check to see if you were holding anything in your hands, itll be cigarettes and vapes next?

The cameras have been in Australia for about 5 years now. I can't see what could be so important to be texting while driving. Privacy should take a back seat if the cameras are saving lives.

AI? Five years?
Yes. It used to be called image recognition.
Was used in production lines to identify & reject malformed products.
Also by big brother to spot suspects at airports/stations.

All that's happened is that it's been rebranded AI so companies can charge more for the same stuff.

You wouldn't even need new kit, you could upgrade exiting speed cameras/anpr to recognize the shape of a phone in addition to numberplate letters.

Yes eating or drinking itself is not an offence, but hard to say you have not been distracted or paid full attention, ie take hand off the wheel or look away from the road etc.

The update in 2022 brought in many changes,

Selecting a new song on your phone playlist - even if stopped and handbrake on this an offence if touch your phone
Using your phone as a SatNav in an unfixed position - at no point can you hold or touch your phone even if for directions
Failing to give pedestrians priority at junctions - as is says if you see a pedestrian waiting to cross you should give way to them
Cutting across cyclists - now treated same as car ie you can't cut across or block their pat
Checking your smartwatch - checking message or skipping a track is an offence, can be worn but not checked or used in any form
Undertaking - now an offence on its own as name suggests
Driving to close to another vehicle - tailgating now an offence on its own
Using your mobile at a drive through - unless you are stopped and hand brake applied and engine off its now an offence.
Smoking - not illegal to smoke but removing your hand from the wheel to inhale is
Loud Music - if deemed to loud to hear other road users and emergency services
Adjusting your seat - if you do this on the move its now an offence.

loads more but amazing how many are not aware of of some of them
