The flavours seem to have settled out now and I'm getting quite a bit of pine/resin presumably from the Chinook. I'll be kegging my 2nd go at this next week. Made a slight change, I added the 45 min addition at 20 mins to ease back on the bittering slightly and hopefully up the flavours a touch :thumb:

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I've just brewed this and was wondering if you thought dry hopping would add anything to it?

I was thinking of just filling off a demi-john worth and dry hopping with Northern Brewer & Centinal 50/50 (I do love hoppy beers :D )

I've pretty much nailed the recipe as she wrote it SG 1052 - FG 1008, it's still in the primary fermenter and has been for one week now, tastes nice but quite dry (so maybe could have done with finishing a little higher) with a sharp bitterness that I'm guessing will mellow with time.

Any feedback appreciated!
 
I suppose you could try dry hopping but I don't think this beer is lacking hop aroma because of the colossal flameout additions.

I brewed this one back in March and it was fantastic (apart from the fact I under-primed it). Just drunk the last bottle of it this evening.

I quite agree with the Dr :thumb: , no reason to change anything really

new on here, but not new to brewing, my question is ,could this be done using the extract route?

if so how much dme would i need?
 
this is my second posting see above, come on guys ,someone out there must know the answer . as i have just purchased a 18/19 ltr stock pot , and my first extract brew golden glory is in the fv. i want to have a go at the bombay but can only do it by extract route.
 
Hi Padders,

If you have a program called beer engine (if you haven't got it, it's a free download and worth having if you don't want to spend money on programs like beer smith), you could calculate how much malt extract you would need to replace the base malt. Just adjust the amount until you have the desired O.G. Just steep the Vienna malt in a muslin bag and jobs a good'un...

It would be fine as an extract I'd imagine as the grain bill is really straight forward. Looking at the recipe, the complexity seems to be in the hops.
 
managed to download beer engin and also the trial of beersmith ,both of which look good, i just wish i understood any of the terminology involved, might have to read a book on the subject first!!!

Have you thought about doing a partial mash? I started off with a 15 ltr pot and went straight to partials. It worked out quite well. I used to mash about 50% of the fermentables then batch sparge to fill the pot and boil with the full quota of hops. Once cooled I topped up to full brew length and added the balance of fermentables as dried extract. Not ideal but it worked ok :-)

not even crossed my mind doing a partial mash, dont know whats involved,i just want to do some extracts for a few brews first. had a few hours to spare and had a play around with beer smith and came up with something that i recon will work,just going to order some stuff and give it a go and see what it turns out like! its going to be one hell of a good beer or a real expensive lemon!.

oops sorry this is based on a full 23ltr brew
i used lme simply because of the cost £4.00 fromHBC ,it seemed the cheapest way in doing an extract brew.
 
With an ABV of 6.8% I suggest you drink it slowly ! :D

I'm still fairly new to extract brewing so I don't have enough knowledge yet to comment on what it will taste like but it looks like a lot of hops for the final 5 mins. Perhaps one of the good folk on here with more knowledge could give a view ?
 
new myself to extract brewing, but having played around with beersimth , thats what i came up with ,and it seems to tick all the right boxes according to beersmith.

you'll be fine with what you have, but I presume the 0.9g of Amarillo is a typo, and also I'd put all the 5min additions in at flameout and steep at 80C for 20mins
 
hi Good Ed, i have just checked on my beersmith recipie and the 0.9g amarilo is correct (according to beersmith) i just kept teweaking the ingredients till it worked with 3 1.5kg tins of LME!.point taken about the flameout additions, this was always my intention,however i wasnt sure how to input o mins into beersmith ,so put it down as fivemins! thanks for the input though.
