Re-visiting the rye porter idea for todays brew but sticking more closely to the Fullers L.Porter Clone recipe with some of the crystal subbed for crystal rye, will make sure I leave it for at least a month to condition this time too! Have started using Beersmith which has taken some getting used to but seems to be giving quite accurate predictions now I have it set up properly and means I dont have to type out recipes manually hurrah!

I put a Porter recipe in the recipe forum that was based on Fullers and used Crystal rye. It was a great beer.

Dude
Where did you get the Adnam's yeast, was it recovered from the Crystal Rye bottles?
Local B&M stores still have this for about 85P a bottle and I have had a few, like the liquorice in it and tempted to make some.

You can only get the yeast from their mini kegs I believe.

Cheers Guys,
I need to get back into mini kegs so I will keep an eye open for these locally whilst still drinking the bottles!
Putting together an order list for malts and will include some rye to try your recipe Dude, probably US 05 to start with.

Hey dudeness, I read back through this thread and saw you liked that tesco/marstons mash up rye pale. It was a fave beer of mine too and what I was aiming for with the rye pale I made recently. It's pretty close too, though you could definitely up the hops.

Recipe is here if you're interested.

Thanks Gareth, that looks a good recipe may well try it at some point. I am well stocked for Rye beer at the moment as I have a batch of rye IPA and a Rye Pale on the go as well plus a Rye porter fermenting away!

You might say you're up to your ryeballs in it.

And I'm not even going to make excuses for that, it's comedy genius.

I fancy brewing a rye beer after tasting the Tesco rye beer.
There is a smoked porter recipe in the greg hughes book that I fancy.
Pale malt 4.5kg.
Smoked 700g.
Black 300g.
Crystal 200g.
Caramunich 1 200g.
Challenger 35g start
Willamette 20g 10 mins
Willamette 20g 0 mins.
Could I replace the crystal with crystal rye and keep the smoked.
Would rye and smoke work together ok.
Also what other hops could I use as I have a collection that I would like to use up.
Styrian goldings/Aurora/Magnum/Simcoe/Progress/Tetnang/Saaz.

Never tried a smoked rye beer myself but I imagine it could work ok, if you replace the crystal in that recipe it will be a fairly low percentage of the grist so might not give you an obvious rye flavour in the beer especially with smoky flavours going on as well. You could also replace some or all the caramunich or consider replacing some of the pale malt with rye malt.

If you like the tesco beer you could also try Gareth's recipe from this thread.

Think I will replace half the caramunich with crystal rye or replace the black with chocolate rye.

I donated one to a mate at work for helping me out late last night. So watch this space (or maybe an update of my brew day thread) and I'll have an unbiased opinion on what it's like. Of course I think it's bloody lovely.

Rye is the way forward and that sounds like a great base for a recipe, was thinking of combining English and American hops on my next rye recipe....
