I just received one of these from Ebay. Nice solid container, that I was intending to store grains in. As warned on the description it smells of garlic, pretty strong, I've got a bit of man flu going on at the moment and it cuts right through that.

Any suggestions for shifting the smell? Oxy maybe?

Hey, I've got a lovely dose of manflu atm and two brews which need bottling/casking
Anyone else joining the epidemic?

No idea on the garlic, but you could always try a garlic beer.

Seriously, we had a fortnight (camping) on the Isle of Wight a few Augusts ago, and on the one day that it didn't **** it down we went to their annual garlic festival, and they even had a garlic beer.

It was feckin' awful!

Oxy or very strong chlorine bleach , like dairy hypo . Or one of the acids that doesnt attack plastics ...hydroflouric ? Or the stuff they use for milkstone in dairies , maybe ? :hmm:

I was given a steel (lined) Boots pressure barrel. Both the barrel and lid smelled musty, really bad. I used baking soda and lemon juice mixed with water on the barrel. This worked fine but the plastic lid still holds the smell. Still not sure what to do.

the paint tech at work has a degree in polymer chemistry and his advise is

the plastic absorbs any liquid it comes into contact with so what you need to do is wash the absorbed liquid out by flooding the area with clean water

so fill to the brim with clean water and leave for 3 days then empty and refill till the smell is gone

on a personel note I find that leaving them outside seems to help as well

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news but I have one of those containers that I use for my boiler. I've had it for about 8 months and brewed a few batches of beer with it. The smell does not taint the brew at all but it's only in there for 90 mins. I did a number of water boil tests first. The smell is still as strong as the day they arrived especially if they are sealed for any period.
I tried VWP, weak bleach, citric acid, and bicarbonate of soda and no difference. Not sure about storing things in them for long durations. It might be worth a test of a small amount and see if they take on the odour. :?

Bugger! Ah well it was fairly cheap. I'll try the water & leaving outside but maybe not hold out too much hope. 24hrs with Oxy has definitely reduced the smell. Thanks for the advice
