I have to admit I hate everything Apple not because their products are crap but because of the attitude of the people who buy their stuff and come out with statements like this.

Microsoft had a stylus-driven tablet PCs in the early 2000s.

I agree with the longevity point. I bought my son an ipad 2 and it is still going strong after 5 years and a cracked screen. My other son's android has been repaired after a year and it is going again. Mind you most of my other tablets are at least a quarter of the price of an apple so horses for courses really.

I must admit its the first time i have read this claim and didn't realise manufacturers like Samsung (a brand i like) were so far behind, my sons tablet is 2 years old and is on constantly it cost under half the price of an i pad yet does everything he needs it to, why would you pay double because you believe it may last longer than another brand?

I am not knocking people who like Apple products but i often wonder how many of them buy the badge not the technology behind it.

Here you go then. I used Apple stuff (we called it Macs in those days because the brainwashing hadn't commenced) for donkey's years, because I work in publishing. You were pretty much tied in to them and their kit was very specialised. As things evolved the older Macs were replaced with the new Apples, which were basically PCs in white cases. The old Mac OS was replaced with one that pretty much resembled Windows (in architecture structure) and I - along with countless others - shunned Apple for PCs. They were as powerful, a hell of a lot cheaper and ran all the software we needed. Before Apple moved to an Intel platform, publishing software was Mac only; PC offerings were awful. Once Apple used Intel the code base allowed everything to be made available on PC.

Because of the final years of using Apple/Mac stuff, I can't stand the company. Would I buy an Apple computer? Never.

My tablet? An iPad. My phone? an iPhone. The reason? They are by far and away superior to all other options I've tried, and as a technobabble writer I've tried most of them.

I'd happily say anything to drive people away from Apple's computers, but their tablets and phones are pretty much a good investment in terms of technology.

I have never used an apple phone/pad probably due to the superior attitude of their customers in the early days which rubbed me up the wrong way, i have Long been a Samsung fan i think their phones are excellent and i have owned several over the years, you may think apple are superior i beg to differ.

I work in Technology - I buy for performance, reliability and longevity. I mainly use for photo editing and video work and on windows .... well you can guess.

I assume an iMac is a laptop - no idea really apart from your context.
If so, aren't you comparing, say, apples with raspberries?
The company Apple actually makes Macintosh - now Mac - computers. They're selling both their own machines, and (nearly) their own operating system at a premium price because they have a reputation for reliability.
Windows is an operating system. It runs on loads of personal computers - made by a whole host of manufacturers, some excellent and some cheaper and flaky.
Your "iMac" might have outlasted the "Windows" machines because they were poor quality. I've had several IBM Thinkpad, then Lenovo machines (when they took them over).
They're built like battle tanks. Superb reliability.
It's a different thing if you don't like Windows, or Microsoft in general.
But there's still an easy answer: use Linux instead. Like OS X or whatever Apple call it now, it's Unix based, therefore resistant to crashing and virus attack.
Best of both worlds, and cheaper than either!

This has to be the way to go - phone connectivity to remote devices that do the basic brewing tasks for you.
I wouldn't train them to test the beer and rank it for palatability though. They might get a taste for it & swig the lot! :)

Unix/Linux - totally agree. All my servers run as such.

My fundamental issue is that Microsoft makes the software but then a zillion 3rd parties make the hardware. Add into the mix a fragmented file system, numerous 3rd party drivers and no end of other peripherals.

It's like a Frankenstein !!

With Apple you don't get the same issues.

At the end of the day though it's down to budget and personal preference, and it all depends on what you want and need the machine to do.

Didn't mean to start the apple/pc debate off lol. I am a hardcore pc man but was given an iphone and i have to say its well built. Dropped loads of times and only a minor crack. Thanks for all the suggestions people. In the end i bought a sh galaxy tab 4, looks like new and will do him nicely. Picked it up locally as paranoid about the postal strike. One less thing to think about. :)

Might be worth putting kitkat custom rom on it.

If you don't know about rooting, adding recovery apps etc. there's lots of info here though you might be better letting your lad do it :)

Clash Royale is pretty much the only game I play on android. I wouldn't worry about recommendations, I'm sure he can find plenty in the store, and there's loads that are free/freemium (I'd recommend not linking any payment methods to the gmail account and then there's no issues with wasting money on freemium games which are perfectly fine without spending money).

Asking him to root it might not be a bad idea. Already tried and failed on my phone as well. Will check out that info though, might have another crack at it. Cheers.

I bought an ASUS shell 1005 10" notebook 8 years ago with xp and 1gb ram.Spilled a full glass of wine over it and dried it out and worked the following day.
Since then it's been given 2gb ram and is now running windows 10.The only thing it doesn't support is cortana.Just saying👍

Well, his name is Barney. He's got a girl friend, called Kaela. They are both rescue dogs, and we got both of them from a place not far from you, "Second Chances", an Edinburgh based charity that specialises in GSDs.
Both our dogs have problems. But we knew this: we're retired and have the time (and experience) to give them a good home and cope with their foibles. They are great friends to us, and to each other!
But don't get the idea that all rescue dogs have problems. We deliberately agreed to take on dogs that weren't "easy", because we're used to it.
Very often you get GSDs that are super dogs, but their problem is the owners. Family divorce & split up, older owner suddenly ill or even dead. The dogs are great - but GSDs bond closely with their owners/friends, and many don't cope well with being abandoned. The family is gone, so they get extremely stressed!
If you really want a puppy, great! But please check out the credentials of the breeder. See the parents, ask for hip scores with GSDs.
Otherwise, I'd say contact Paul at Second Chances. He'll want to know a lot about you, but that will be so they can place a suitable dog. In my experience, they definitely won't try to "dump" an unsuitable dog - they really care about finding a suitable home for both the dog and the next owners. It probably won't be a puppy, but there are some great GSDs out there just looking for someone to bond with and be friends for life!
