Good morning brewers!

Having only just started to homebrew ale from the grain rather than from a kit, I was wondering if someone could answer my question.

I'm following a Dave Line recipe for "Greene King Strong Pale Ale", the problem is that the recipe recommends using 60 grams of brewers yeast and I only have 30 grams.

Will using 30g of yeast instead of 60g actually make a difference or will it just take longer to ferment? Are there any problems with using less yeast?

Thanks

The higher the og the more yeast you want.

Without all the varibles we can not answer your question, ORIGINAL GRAVITY, QUANTITY OF WORT, YEAST TYPE (DRIED/LIQUID).

There is a good yeast pitching calculator on http://www.mrmalty.com if pitching dried yeast, for best results rehydrate it first with 10 times the amount of water to weight of yeast, 60g-600ml @ between 35-39 deg C, stir well let the temp drop to within 5 deg of your final wort temp then pitch, (you will get a much better fermentation than sprinkling the dried yeast on top)

I had a similar problem i had only one packet of nottingham for 55l so I made up a couple litres of DME to 1020 and added the yeast. I pitched this on friday to my wort and it seems to have had a jolly time over the weekend 30points in 4 days.

Apologies, I am fairly new to homebrewing:

What is DME?

What does 30 points in 4 days mean?

Thank you

DME is Dried Malt Extract, otherwise known as Spraymalt.

Points is referring to hydrometer readings of sugar content, for example an Original Gravity of 1.045 coming down to 1.015 would be a drop of 30 points.

So is the general consensus that I make up a batch of DME and let my yeast grow before adding it to my wort?

Thanks

Not if you have 30g of it!! I pitched 36g of dried yeast into 80L of beer and it fermented out in 2 days.

Dave Line was talking about true brewers yeast from a brewery which would be wet, as others have said what type of yeast are you pitching . . . dried, pressed or liquid . . . how much wort . . . gravity of the wort (Ah Greene King Strong Pale 4 UK Gallons at 1.060)30g of dried yeast is more than enough to ferment that . . . I used 30g in 23L of Courage Russian Imperial Stout (1.102) with no issues whatever.
