So I brewed an APA on Monday, checked to see how it was getting on this morning and my sample had a very strong orangey, almost marmalade type smell to it.

I've never had this before, could this be a problem with the yeast (underpitched?). It seems to be fermenting ok and has come down a couple points over the last few days.

This is the first time I have used my own tap water to brew with, could it be that?

Just wondering if it's worth putting another packet of yeast in there

Sounds lovely but i suspect by now you should be (or have been able to) smelling an alcohol smell in there too? Have you seen any signs of Krausen over the last week?

Ha! It does smell pretty good, just worried something has gone a miss as I've never experienced this before.

Krausen is there, and the smell has subsided a little from yesterday. Yeast was just US05 rehydrated

Have you brewed this beer before?
My guess is that it is the hops. If its an APA it is likely to have citrussy hops in there somewhere. Amarillo, for example, is very orange like.
Very unlikely to be anything to do with the water, and can't understand what extra yeast would be expected to do :confused.:

No first time brewing this and I did add amarillo post boil (not sure if I've actually used amarillo come to think about it)
I was worried that I had maybe underpitched.

To be honest I really hope it is just the hops as it's pretty prominent so would be pretty good if it settles a little!!

If you have used Amarillo its that. I use this hop. Much more orange than Cascade for example. And its very noticeable.

That's really good to know, I was probably overthinking it but just a little concerned with how prominent it was. Got a load to dry hop with as well so looking forward to that!

Recently did a cream ale using Amarillo for the first time.

Citrus for sure. I did one addition at twenty minutes so I got bitter, flavor, and some aroma. Really didn't like it at first but, after six weeks I'm wishing I had more. It really rounded out.
