Is that one of those "ding ding" cables lying on the floor? You know, you drive over them and something goes ding inside the shop to let the person know there's a customer to serve.
Or am I thinking about something else?

I would say yes, back in those days it wasn't self service so the attendant needed to know when customers arrived.
