I ended up cleaning with PBW, then cleaned my cornies and bm with same batch to get my moneys worth .

I went for citric acid to passivate and asked the mrs to pick some up a couple of KG at the supermarket. She cam back with 20 individual 100g packs so in the end may have cost me more than using the star san solution. but i am good to go now.

i have what i feel could be a stupid question about the brewbucket though - how does the rotating racking arm rotate?

I cleaned initially with PBW then bought some TSP as it is quite cheap and easy to do off amazon. I found that I when I used the TSP it went the solution discoloured, went darker. So it seemed to do more than just the PBW.

I used citric acid to passivate. If you are spending a wedge of cash on a SS fermenter why risk it.

I used TSP as per instructions. Not sure how necessary it was, but it was a major PITA. The warnings that came with the TSP scared the $hit out of me. Safety goggles, heavy duty elbow length rubber gloves.

If I bought more SS I'd probably forego the TSP and use oxi

I bought a lovely shiny SS conical for 500 plus quid.
it was fine as is.
the Mrs on the other hand required some passivation. I told her I couldn't afford not to buy it, my flawless logic she refused to understand..

TSP In diluted form is not that bad. I don't wear gloves and it gives me a bit of dry skin afterwards but nothing more.

I use barkeepers friend once a year great stuff mirror polished finish but you do need to wash it thoroughly with hot water after use, then polish with a microfiber cloth otherwise you can get a white milky residue after a boil

On a tangent, for those that are using SS cleaning products, what wound you recommend for bringing a cooker up clean again?

TSP without a doubt. Really does cut through grease. I also find starsan leaves SS very shiny
