Hi,

Looking for some gas advice please.

I recently scrapped a Lincat DF4 fryer as the tank was ruptured. Else it was fully functioning.

I have kept the valve (SIT Nova mV) and was looking to repurpose it in a home brewing set up. I'd like to control the temperature of a hot liquor tun that sits on a propane ring burner. The ring burner is a very simple affair with no flame failure device.

Looking to use the valve to control the propane ring, reusing the pilot assembly from the fryer, to provide the pilot, thermocouple and the themopile.
I will need to get a new thermostat as the engineer that removed it cut the wire before it occurred to me I could have another use of it.

The main question I need answering is can I use the valve without an overheat stat?

Obviously no need for one as it is only boiling water and water can't go on fire.

Also, any idea if I could use a PID in place of a rotary thermostat?

Many thanks,

I have had a read up ....
I think you could use it without an overheat stat.
But it will need a ignition cutout, but presumably with is part of the pilot setup?

This of course will need a temp stat.
This is a simple on/off valve. It relights from the pilot when called by the stat.
If you have a 220v version an electronic stat (or controller /pid) would be better than a mechanical 'stat'. It would of course be far more accurate. I don't think he cut up anything you might want 👍👍

The issue for me is presumably this is a "pot on the stove" type setup. You don't mention volume. That will have some design implications.

A. Cowling. PID and inkbird controllers are plastic, and would need protecting from the heat.

B. Everytime you lift the pan off you need to remove the probe? Something Bluetooth/WiFi might be good?

Another design feature to consider... You can easily have "boil boost " and "mash temp control" profiles simply by switching rings on and off... While letting the valve do the work.

IMPORTANT BIT... I am NOT a gas engineer. The views expressed here are just the creation of an overactive, serial tinkerer of many years service and a full set of fingers.
