Hop bags - lidl

Thought I’d share this in case anyone fancies trying it :)

I was doing my shopping in Lidl today and noticed they had nice eco friendly nylon bags for carrying your fruit and veg home in. 2 of them for 49p. Well I thought hey they look great as a hop bag! Had a brew day today and tested it. Nice big size, so handled all my hops, the tie handle can easily be used to tie on to the outside of your kettle. And then I tipped out the hops and used a hose to spray it clean - looks like brand new.

I'd heard they were doing the same sort of thing in Sainsbury's and had my lad send me half a dozen over. They're amazing. A bit too big for dry hopping (unless you're making a quad+ IPA) but you could shove a load of leaf hops in a 20-30 litre brew and get much more circulation than with a hop spider. Too loose a weave for pellets, though, I think.

I picked up some from Asda hiding in the veg section 3 for £1 but are a bit different and have a green cord. I wanted to see if they would melt or be ok.

I've also seen hop bags made from spun fabric rather than woven but wondered about if they would allow enough in/out to work.

I’ve used the Lidl ones for my last four brews, both dry hop and boil and they are fine. I’ve used them to boil up to 100g pellets. I secure them to the side of my Peco boiler with a bulldog clip.

should be on vegetable aisle, think Tesco had them-but not certain

For my first AG I used hop bags but these were really small and did restrict extraction and my bitter came out very sweet. Since then I’ve used these Lidl bags for my brews and they have come out great. If I need more than 100g hops I use more than one bag so there’s plenty of room in there and you can see the hops rolling around in the boil. I only clip the bags to the side to prevent the touching the element. Ive never used a hop spider nor chucked the hops straight in so am not able to compare.

This is good news, as I'm presently using nylon hop bags from crossmyloof but they tear easily and don't seem to last more than one brew. Off to Lidl it is!

Are these the spun fibre ones that look like garden fleece? If so they are not very strong and probably impossible to wash. Easier to make though as they can be heat sealed.

I think so, they certainly look to be sealed round the edges rather than sewn.

these are white 'nylon' bags

The Sainsbury's ones are a work of art: 34x30 cm very fine mesh stitched on two sides and provided with a nylon drawstring. Made in China 100% from plastic bottles. They look strong and reusable.
