Just got the salifert test kit and trying to understand the results.

I have a KH value in DKH of 8.0, Alkalinity in meq / L 2.85.

How do I interpret these results into the forum calculators?

Also my water report says total hardness of 17 degrees clark whick works out at 240 ppm. How should I enter that to the calculator?

2.85 * 50 = 142.5 mg/l of CaCO3
Add 142.5 into the relevant box on the calculator.

Theres no need to add in the hardness from your water report you have just worked it out using the salifert ;)

But I dont have a figure for calcium or magnesium.

I use the average figures on my areas published water report.
You should be able to download it from the water suppliers website, or ring them and ask them to send you one in the post.

I was down swadlincote yesterday, no plans to go that way again for a while but it would be cool to pop down sometime. Thanks for the offer.

robsan.
Ask the water company for a full water report.
Looks like you've just got the mini version there......mine runs to 4 pages of A4

Can you get a more detailed report Robsan? United Utilities does mine and you get that level of info on the first page but you can click through for a more detailed report. I'm fairly sure there is a how to guide on Jims for using a salifert kit if you can't find one here. I've only just got one too, so I'm in the same boat :)

on hold to severn trent right now. They have an IT problem at the mo so I cant get the detailed report. Hopefully by the end of the day. :)

Without going into calculations it looks like you will generally need to add brewing salts to get a good example for darker beers and stouts. Do some research and put these figures into the forum calculator and it will tell you how much to add. :thumb:

Hi,
if you know the alkilinity we shall leave 38 alk for a bitter so 142-38 leaves 104 . so 104 X volume of water to be treated say 30litres divided by 180 =17mls of crs.
Now if I was making a bitter I want to use DLS (dry liquor salts) look at the Brupacks site on the chart for DLS look at your alk reading and work out the amount of DLS per litre ADD half dry in grist and half in boil. Good luck . I might not be right but the lads on this site are better than me

I have looked at the Brupaks site and for a alkilinity of 142 to leave your alkilinity at 38 for Bitter you need to add 0.56 ml of CRS per litre of liquor eg. 30 litres x 0.56 = 16ml . And 0.8 grm of DLS per brewlength. so a 10 litre mash 10 x.08 of DLS in grist dry and 13x.08 in boil 10grms. I hope this helps and is correct
