What a great thread, came here from my own asking what to brew clibit pointed me here, thanks, got me interested now, I lucky to have a hb store about 20mins from home, I like the doom bar style of drink, any recipie recommendations for this? Never done grains before only ever can kits, also used to making 20ltr a time what size pots will I need, or can I mash in a large 23ltr fv and boil in smaller pots?

With a 23 litre pot you could make much bigger batches than 5 litre. Or 5 litre if you like. Alternatively get a 10 - 15 litre pot.

10 litre AG, possibly more with a bit of jiggery pokery, adding sparge wort as the level drops in the boil.

Or you can do a 5 gallon partial mash brew by making 10 litres of AG wort, and adding extract and cold water to the FV to make up a 20-25 litre partial mash beer. This makes pretty much AG quality beer, dry extract seems to be better to me and you can use the exact weight you want. You obviously add enough hops in the boil for the full amount of beer you are making. Adding 10-15 litres cold water to the FV also enables you to get down to pitching temperature quickly.

So basically brew up a can type one, and add this on top of the grain wort after the boil

Either add the grain wort to a kit can, or add it to straight malt extract. I would recommend using straight dry malt extract. My best partial mash results have come that way.

Think a trip to the hb shop tommrow, what is in order, what dry malt do you recommend and what quantities of grain etc for a 25 ltr batch

What would you like to make? Name a beer you like and I'll bang a recipe together that will make something similar ish.

Never got to hb shop, so built a 30 ltr boiler with some old kettles and a mash tun from a cool box

I've got these left thinking of a small brew.
Got some dark malt too. What's people's thought as going to do later.

600 maris otter
250 wheat
70 crystal
55 Caramalt
25 oats.
Simcoe
Nelsons
Lemon and lime zest

You could make a nice beer with that, 5L using 600g MO, 200g wheat, 50g caramalt and 50g crystal. OG 1040 ish.

Either hop on their own, or a mix. 5g of either hop for 60 mins, about 35 IBUs, and then one or both hops at flameout, about 10g.

I have been busy brewing small batches recently as I have only small brew pot and not yet made the steps to full 5 gallon brewing, I am working on the steps as I have now acquired a cool box and I have been looking at the manifold requirements etc... anyway just wanted to post that I am loving the small batch brewing and I am enjoying researching recipes and adapting recipes which touch wood so far have been drinkable beers, I have in 3 x FV at the moment 2 x APA (one of which I have hopped with pellets during the 60 min boil, Chinook, Amarillo, Cascade and Citra and the other beer is a single hop Amarillo) and in my 3rd FV I have my 1st attempt at an oat stout which I am calling my xmas ale as I have added 50g of Swiss Dark 70% cocoa chocolate which I melted and added at the 60min boil. I believe I would still be on kit beers if it wasn't for this forum and this thread in particular, I am now going to adventure into the partial mash brew rather than going all the way back to a full kit to make a 5 gallon batch, I will follow the link from Clibit to achieve this goal. Cheers from a very happy brewer.

Cheers Pad, it's great to hear you are experimenting and finding out lots about brewing, and enjoying the process. :thumb:

And the beer. :drink:

Gawd knows what it will come out like!
2KG Maris Otter
100G Choc Malt
100G Flaked Barley
100G Roasted Barley
20G EKG hops for the 60 minutes boil
10G EKG at ten mins left of boil.
10L
Wilko ale yeast.
Game on! Love the experimenting, cost me about 4 bob, but priceless time with son.
Thanks clibit.
