FIRST EVER AG

evening all.

As some of you on here already now ive atempted my fist AG brew tonight. it a variation of the Styrian stunner, using Goldings instead od Styrian. i am now 30 minutes into the first 90 minute boil. (god its going to be a late one for me). anyway all is going well. ill post some pics later in the week to let you know how it went.

well at 4.30 in the morning i finaly finished. (next brew is going to be an early one). finished with a hydro reading at 1.048. please let me know if thats ok. ive got quite a few pictures to post , thats if i dont spend the next week sleeping. :)

for all those out there who are thing of moving over to the dark side, do it. its not as hard as you might think.

for all those out there who are thing of moving over to the dark side, do it. its not as hard as you might think.

Agreed, first time might be a bit fraught, are you doing it right, have you forgotten anything?
Second time is easier as you build confidence and have a better understanding of how your own set-up behaves.

Main thing is though, what they all say is true, it's a lot more effort and takes considerably longer than opening a tin and mixing a few things together, but it's really not difficult, you've made it yourself and it's proper beer, and when you taste it you can't go back. It can be even cheaper than kits too.

here of the pictures of my fist AG, as some of you know i used the BIAB method untill i complete my set up.

this is the electrim 25lt boiler which was used throughot the brew.

the grain goes in

rain stops play outside, so it was moved into mrs sivs kitchen (she wasnt very happy)

mashin the grain almost complete, temp was 60 but after a quick word with wez increased it upto 65.

it beer time (G S EPORT)

having a quick chat with the lads while waiting for the mash to finish

after 90 minutes the hops are finaly ready. almost there

after 7 hours of hard work and several beers its all done

taking the hydro reading the SG was 1.048

prepairing the yeast.

all done the yeast as been added to the FV

all done it 4.30am just time to grap a couple of hours sleep. the FV is wraped up in its nice pink sleeping bag to keep the temperature at 20 degrees tii the morning.

i know these picture are not breath taking unlike some of the other brew day threads on the forum. but i hope that it just goes to show how easy AG brewing can be.

here is the reciepe i used


4 kg maris
50g goldlings full boil 90 minutes
25g 15 minutes to go
25g after heat is off

nottingham yeast

Im having to put off my first ag! :cry: was testing my home made boiler! and it was working, until it went bang and tripped the power yet again! got a good old telling off for that and what happened next (just say when testing a kettle element dont leave it on the carpet whilst testing!!) after the 2nd telling off I was told to buy a ready made boiler need to save up my brass or find one of those 20ps thats worth £50! :thumb:

fermenting away nicely wez. a lot more vigorous than the kit yeast im used to.

Have you still got the bag matt round it? Just checking as I am having to keep my FV in a water bath just to keep the temperatures down with the current heatwave! I am just managing to keep the 25C maximum recommended for S-04!

no bolty the foam comes off during the day and the fan comes on.
i found that way the temperature stays at 20 degrees.
