fermentation vessels

Hi all, and a Happy New Year to you.

I have acquired two 25l plastic barrel / drums which have previously had car wash soap and screen wash in. If i rinse and sterilize them well can i use them as fermentation vessels? They have a screw cap which could be adapted to put an airlock on.

not really reccomended, they need to be made of food safe material let alone having been used for chemicals

Check the stamps on the bottom of the container, but if you're happy you've washed well and there are no strong smells, go ahead.

The screen wash is just a weak alcohol solution, I've successfully used isopropanol drums, but I'm not convinced about the detergent container.

If you can get hold of de-ionised water drums, those should carry the 'food safe' fork and glass symbol.

I used a 25 litre white plastic polythene drum to carry spare water and antifreeze in, to top up my old land rover,I washed it out with a high pressure steam cleaner and flushed it about 10 times.
Now every time I take the rad cap off the land rover its like switching on an artificial snow making machine so be very careful of containers that have had chemicals or detergents in I wouldn't trust them if I were you.

I was given some barrels that had had bleach in them.......I chucked them even though people use bleach for sterilising. What you want are the blue food barrels which have had food additives or chutneys in. They are pretty sturdy I use them for all my fv's mash tun boiler and hlt .

Halfords used to do 25litre drinking water containers in clear polythene with a tap for about £6 last time i was in the camping part of there shop.
